Besides his online antics, Ye took aim at Frank Ocean, J. Cole, John Legend, JAY-Z and Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Playboi Carti and so many others in an hour-long interview with Akademiks In his rant, he directly addressed Hov, calling out his lack of support. “JAY-Z, Beyoncé, you ain’t help me when I was having problems with my kids… You ain’t show up to my first wedding. You ain’t my family,” he said. His grievances extended to Lamar as well, accusing the Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper of lifting elements from The Life of Pablo for Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. “It’s like, ‘Oh, these are the drums from this song. This is the approach to this song’,” he claimed. Meanwhile, Smith himself admitted to looking to Lamar and JAY-Z for guidance while crafting his comeback album, Based on a True Story. According to the multifaceted star, the two Hip-Hop giants encouraged him to embrace raw honesty in his music. “Say that sh*t you’ve always been fu**king scared to say,” Smith recalled of K. The albums growing on me slowly. I will have to reevaluate the whole thing in a few months or so

It’s really hard to rank. Willenium is and always has been the clear #1 for me. It’s the most complete album he made. I could listen to random songs from it or front to back. It may also be that I vividly remember getting that album and playing it on repeat at age 12. I will acknowledge BWS is ten times more commercially successful, but it feels like a grab bag of singles in comparison. So: 1. Willenium ……… ……… 2. BWS 3. BOATS 4. Lost and Found 5. Born to Reign Lost and Found could switch places with BOATS. BOATS has two strikes: (a) cursing and (b) saying “someone you could base your whole life on.” I largely avoid commenting on his personal life but if anything it’s one of those don’t meet your heroes things when I think about red table plus the slap. Lost and Found’s strikes are the mid 2000’s style he lifts (Party Starter/Ludacris) and his fifteen remixes of Switch lol. Born to Reign will forever be the hardest to relisten to. It was a real creative stretch which I hate to penalize.

I’ve found a website for the official streaming chart in the UK but it’s not in the top 100. I’ve got a feeling it gets updated weekly because they announce it on radio 1. So maybe we’ll see on Friday.

The album debuted #3. The press tour is definitely going to help on the concerts.

I love this. I don’t know if everyone will agree with me but I think his team have done a great job promoting this album on social media. He used to go on shows like TRL to promote it but the world is so different now. They know what people like, going viral with the anxiety video because they know everyone loves Fresh Prince, joining influencers on videos and doing stuff like this. It’s just seems to be getting bigger and although he’s getting a lot of hate still. I can see a lot more positive comments and love, particularly on this barbershop video. It was a good move.

I’m so glad he put this out and that it fits easily with the time length and style of reels/tiktok. The more this kind of flow gets promotion the more I hope he leans in to these types of songs.

You quoting it is exactly what I came here to say. The 20 of us or so who ate up every “freestyle” post Lost and Found became, shall I say, a bit disenchanted knowing he wasn’t turning over a new record. I had to shake my cynicism and say: (a) yes, this is likely a track he wrote, (b) it could be on the cutting room floor or repurposed but (c) he’s not done producing new music this year so I can just relax and enjoy. definitely high quality verses for sure even if something he had in the hopper already.
