LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The DreamWorks cartoon "Shark Tale" grossed more than $80 million during its first week on home video, the studio said, surpassing its $56 million opening-week box office take. "Shark Tale" sold more than 6 million combined DVD and VHS units across the United States and Canada, more than 5.5 million of which were DVDs, it added. "Shark Tale," with an ensemble voice cast including Will Smith, Robert De Niro, Renee Zellweger, Angelina Jolie, Jack Black and Martin Scorsese, has become the best-selling home video of the year and the top-grossing Week 1 DVD of all time for a February release window. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was the previous Week 1 record holder for February, selling more than 4 million DVDs during its 2003 bow, according to industry sources and Nielsen VideoScan sales data. Larger boxoffice draws such as the Disney's "The Lion King," Disney/Pixar's "Finding Nemo" and DreamWorks' "Shrek" and "Shrek 2" are usually timed for video release during the busy fourth-quarter shopping season. Overall, the 1995 home video release of "Lion King" still holds the all-time Week 1 sales record, followed by "Shrek 2," "Nemo," "Shrek," Disney/Pixar's "Monster's Inc." and "Shark Tale," according to industry sources. DreamWorks' tale of a bottom-feeder turned "sharkslayer" generated an estimated $160 million at the domestic box office and is nominated for a best animated feature film Oscar. While "Shark Tale" didn't have nearly the theatrical success that DreamWorks Animation had with "Shrek," which took in $267.7 million domestically, and "Shrek 2," which became the top-grossing domestic film of 2004 with $436.5 million, its first-week home video sales record bodes well for a film of its comparable box office take. "Shrek 2" also was the best-selling home video last year, generating an estimated $458 million in total consumer spending in North America. Reuters/Hollywood Reporter

US Audiences Bewitched By Hitch Will Smith rom-com debuts with record showing 14 February 2005 Nobody likes a smug smart-arse, but today Empire’s colleagues will have to cope. For, ever since this Empire correspondent saw Will Smith’s first stab at romantic comedy at a crowded screening a couple of weeks back, we’ve been telling anyone who’ll listen – colleagues, friends, family, taxi drivers, Big Issue sellers – that Hitch was going to be huge. Mainly because it’s been a long time since we saw any film play so well – the audience laughed uproariously in all the right places, ‘aaaaah’-ed in others, and applauded when, well, certain characters got together. How huge are we talking? Try There’s Something About Mary huge. And you know what? We woz right… This weekend, Hitch – in which Smith plays a legendary New York date doctor whose wisdom and cool flies out the window when he meets a sassy and beautiful journalist (Eva Mendes) – stormed to the top of the US box office chart with an astonishing $45 million take. Appealing to audiences across the board – men, women, multi-racial - that makes it the biggest debut for a romantic comedy in history, and with around 92% of audience members declaring that they’ll recommend the movie, Empire expects that this very funny, smart and sweet rom-com has a shot at $200 million; it’s a safe bet that this won’t be Smith’s last stab at the genre… Hitch also gives Smith – the world’s biggest African-American box office draw – a set of stats that any star would be proud of. The I, Robot star has now opened seven movies to more than $45 million. He also now has an opening weekend average of $34.3 million – the highest of any actor. So maybe it’s time to throw away that ‘African-American’ part and call it as it is – right now, Will Smith is the biggest movie star in the world. Period. Hitch’s colossal opening (oo-er) re-energised the box office, which had been suffering somewhat from a dose of the SADs. http://www.empireonline.co.uk/site/news/ne...p?news_id=16554

hitch did 14.5 million friday 19.1 million saturday and they have predicted 11.9 million for sunday..that projection for sunday is real low.. i think it can atleast do 14 million up to 16.. so i think the actuals will be 47-50 million for hitch..once again people underestimated will predicting low to mid 30s but i always knew this was gonna be huge..plus you got valentines day monday..and a long weekend next week so this will race past 100 million in just over a week
