Oscar pursuit of Jaden Smith would be a natural Posted 12/21/2006 8:33 PM ET By Claudia Puig, USA TODAY Actors under 20 stole the screen from their elders this year. None of these actors got a Golden Globe nomination, but USA TODAY makes a case for Oscar voters to catch these five performances: The actor: Jaden Christopher Syre Smith, 8 The role: Christopher in Pursuit of Happyness, now in theaters The son of stars Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Jaden has an acting pedigree. Still, his natural, low-key quality on screen is both astounding and moving. He has a wonderfully expressive face, with a smile that lights up an entire theater. When he tells a silly, childish joke, he's both endearing and heartwarming. He seems to have inherited his father's easy charm. In Happyness, he plays the 5-year-old son of a hardworking man who just can't catch a break. His father has a series of major setbacks, which reach their nadir when the two are rendered homeless, sleeping in a train-station bathroom. Jaden blithely clings to his father's hand, repeating that he trusts him, seeming to play along with his father's desperate attempts at normalcy. But he also has a healthy dose of realism, blurting out the truth in situations when his father would rather fool people into thinking they're doing better than they are. Throughout, his performance is never hammy. He plays this resilient boy in a way that indicates an innate intelligence. He seems to sense how down-and-out they are; you can read his fear, and even his occasional anger. He's not a sunny Pollyanna of a child, but he's not a cynic, either. It's as if he realizes that the only way to survive is to keep his head down and persevere. He is, however, still a child. When his father, having just made a few bucks, offers him some candy, his first reaction is to deny himself. But like an ordinary kid, he quickly changes his mind and takes the candy. The way he communicates this acceptance of his lot is low-key and subtle, revealing an acting finesse that many far older actors don't manage. What's next: Nothing announced as yet. http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2...ars-jaden_x.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- thought this was interesting, there's also been some "For Your Consideration" ads floating around to nominate Will for Best Actor, and Jaden for Best Supporting Actor...while I doubt he'll get an Oscar nod I think it's cool people recognize his acting skills. I think he may have a good chance for the Critic's Choice Award (Best Youth Actor Male) that he's up for....Dakota Fanning won (for I Am Sam) in the Female category the same year Will was up for Ali.
-
thnx, I probably woulda missed it.
-
not that I know of, I updated his schedule a bit, but there's nothing about a Leno appearance, if he was he probably would've done it the day of the premiere when he was in LA, like he did for Bad Boys 2.

'Happyness' Delivers Box Office Joy By DAVID GERMAIN, AP Movie Writer LOS ANGELES - Not even a dragon or the world's most-beloved spider could deny Will Smith another first-place finish at the box office. Sony's father-son drama "The Pursuit of Happyness," starring Smith and his own son, Jaden Christopher Syre Smith, debuted as the No. 1 movie with $27 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. Smith's latest topped 20th Century Fox's dragon fantasy "Eragon," which opened in second place with $23.45 million, and Paramount's children's tale "Charlotte's Web," which premiered a distant third with $12 million. The previous weekend's No. 1 movie, Mel Gibson's Mayan saga "Apocalypto," fell to sixth place with $7.7 million, raising its 10-day total to $27.9 million. The story of a struggling dad who becomes homeless along with his young son, "Pursuit of Happyness" joins a long line of No. 1 openings for Smith, including the action tales "Independence Day" and "I, Robot." "Audiences around the world love him," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution at Sony, whose past hits with Smith include the "Men in Black" flicks and last year's romantic comedy "Hitch." "Everyone who sees Will Smith or meets Will Smith feels like he could be their best friend," Bruer said. "He has that type of charisma that resonates throughout whatever room he's in." Combining live action and computer animation, "Charlotte's Web" had a soft opening despite an all-star voice cast including Julia Roberts, Robert Redford and Oprah Winfrey in E.B. White's classic about a spider that befriends a lonely pig. Don Harris, executive vice president of distribution at Paramount, said the studio hopes "Charlotte's Web" will follow the pattern of other pre-Christmas family releases such as "Stuart Little" and "The Prince of Egypt," which opened in the same range but held on through the holidays to become hits. "The movie has every chance to get to $100 million off of this opening," Harris said. Paramount's musical "Dreamgirls," starring Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson in an adaptation of the stage hit, opened to big numbers at three theaters in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Premiering with reserved seating and special programs at a premium ticket price of $25, the film took in $360,000, a healthy start to its nationwide release on Christmas. George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh's latest collaboration, "The Good German," debuted solidly with $78,572 at five theaters. Clooney stars with Cate Blanchett and Tobey Maguire in a black-and-white tale of murder and intrigue in Berlin just after World War II. Overall business was off, with the top 12 movies taking in $112.3 million, down 8.3 percent compared to the same weekend last year, when two blockbusters _ "King Kong" and "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" _ were Nos. 1 and 2. This weekend's holdover films retained strong audiences, though, a sign that many current movies may have a long shelf life, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "It's hard to say this is a positive thing that this is a down weekend. But the strength of this weekend has been the holdovers," Dergarabedian said. "There is a lot of depth to the marketplace. It's a direct reflection of audience satisfaction. That's more important I think than beating last year's competition." Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday. 1. "The Pursuit of Happyness," $27 million. 2. "Eragon," $23.45 million. 3. "Charlotte's Web," $12 million. 4. "Happy Feet," $8.5 million. 5. "The Holiday," $8.2 million. 6. "Apocalypto," $7.7 million. 7. "Blood Diamond," $6.3 million. 8. "Casino Royale," $5.7 million. 9. "The Nativity Story," $4.7 million. 10. "Unaccompanied Minors," $3.7 million. http://www.comcast.net/entertainment/index.../17/543776.html

wow, lets see, overall I give the movie 8/10. I didn't find it too fast or too slow, def. didn't feel like they played the manipulative "sentimental" card too much. It is a good drama, but it has enough funny moments so that it doesn't get too heavy. One thing that did bother me a bit was some of the voice over(in some scenes I felt it worked really well), the other thing was Thandie Newton's performance, I feel she has the tendancy to over act, either that or she did the irritated bitchy role very well lol. It's def. an entertaining film, I recommend it. (trying not to give too much away here) As far as Will's performance I gave him 9/10. I can see why he has Oscar buzzin'. He's never too over the top, and doesn't do that "Will Smith Thing" he's so famous for. This is def. a different Will onscreen, so much so that I didn't feel like I was watching Will onscreen. I was watching this character, and I'm so glad he stepped away from saving the world, even if just for a minute. Jaden did a great job I'm sure he'll have no problem having a future in showbiz if that's what he wants, for a kid looking to do comedy he does drama extremely well. The thing I appreciated the most was the father-son relationship in the film, it's so clear this guy just wants to do the right thing for his kid, that he comes first in his dad's life. Personally I think there should be more films like this.
