  1. To no one's surprise, Jay-Z debuts at #1 on the Nielsen Soundscan charts released today. With the holiday craze in full swing, Kingdom Come moved over 680,000 units making it the highest debut for a rap album and the 2nd highest debut of the year. It is the ex-retiree's biggest sales week ever, as well as his ninth No. 1 on the chart. He thusly ties the Rolling Stones for the third-most No. 1s, behind the Beatles with 19 and Elvis Presley with 10. 2. After thinking about it for a long time I've come to the decision that a battle between LL & Jay will not happen. I think there's too much respect between the two for it to ever resort to beefing. I wouldn't want to see a battle anyway because neither rapper is not in a place mentally to really put on a great battle. LL's last great battle was with Moe Dee(Cannibus doesn't count because LL put him to sleep rather quickly) while Jay's last battle was Nas(don't even talk to me about Dipset; that's not a battle - it's Jay basically toying with them).
  3. My dream scenario would for Will to retire from rap as The Fresh Prince. Do about 2 albums as JJFP and then ride off into the sunset. I know Will can't keep rapping 4ever so my only wish would be 2 more JJFP albums.
  4. LOL at Cozmo's revolutionary rant but I do feel you on what you said. The industry needs to be destroyed and rebuilt. Too few people have control over the whole industry. The music industry as it's constructed now is a dinosaur that's too stupid to understand that it's going to die in its current state. Digital is not only the future, it's already here. They keep trying to control the digital scene and downloading because in the digital form the people control the music. The industry is archaic and outdated and it needs to die.
  5. I wouldn't consider John Mayer R&B either but the person who posted it at UrbanConnect.com put him in there so.... BTW, love John's new album Continuum

  7. Absolutely. I'm one of the few people on this board that would like to see him do more movies. He's done more than enough for me in terms of music. Now I would like to see him win acting awards(Golden Globe, Oscar, etc.). If he quits music for good I'll be fine with it as long as he really feels it's time to put the mic down. Maybe he just needs a break to sort out his feelings about the industry. If I were him I would release music independently... but that's just me.
  8. Nas is basically saying what I've been saying for years. If artists want to maintain integrity in their music, they've got to go the independent route. I'm not saying all artists on big labels have no integrity it's just that if you want true musical freedom then you can't be on a big label. There's too much b.s. in the industry whether it's having to kiss "studio" DJs butt to get your songs played(*cough*Kay-Slay*cough*) or dumbing down your music. It's just not worth it anymore.
  9. I'm not all that upset if Will decides to retire for good. We have 9 albums to listen to and enjoy and as I've said many times before he doesn't have anything to prove. The industry is in shambles right now. There's just too much politics and not enough originality and freedom in music right now. I think people in their 30's still check for hip-hop it's just that they're not going to accept everything that comes out. Rap is, and always will be, music for young people and unfortunately the vast majority of rap is really dumbed down. I think AJ said it best when it comes to doing music. It's not fun anymore. It's all about the numbers, whether or not you can get on TRL. People lose their identity(if they ever had one to begin with) when they just focus on making money and worrying about sales. If Will retires then I say at least he retired with dignity and honor in the form of Lost & Found. He never sold out to sell records and make money. He is one the best emcees to rock the mike. Period.
  10. (Sarcastically) AJ, tell us how you really about Jay-Z.
  11. In Thursday's edition of the Chicago Sun-Times, Elroy Smith, program director & GM of WGCI-FM(which won the Marconi award for best urban radio station in the country) had some comments about Michael Jackson and his impending album. At one point in the interview he had this to say about Michael: ''I'm not going to play Michael Jackson because it's Michael Jackson,'' Smith said. ''But if it has an urban flair to it, if it has potential, oh yeah, we will truly give it a shot.'' Now maybe it's just me but I took offense to this statement. Despite his much-publicized antics this dude is a musical genius. His Thriller album has now sold 104 million copies worldwide. It sounds to me, if you read between the lines, that if it's not "radio-friendly" then he's not going to put MJ on the playlist. This is the problem with radio stations now. Give the people the choice of whether or not the music is good. Am I the only one who sees this statement as a shot at Michael? BTW you can read the whole interview here.
  12. Great interview. I have a good feeling that Will will hear his name on the morning of January 23rd as an Oscar nominee. I wouldn't worry about the Scientology stuff. It felt to me like he wasn't serious about it.
  13. I agree with both your points. It's just unfortunate that all the industry cares about is sales instead of talent. In a better world, Lupe and Robin Thicke would be 2X platinum by now instead of the garbage that sells. Just got to continue to support real music and real artists no matter what.

  15. AJ, Everything you just said is right on the money... except in this one case. While a lot of Jay's material leaves a lot to be desired I think he stepped his game up on this album. Songs like 30-Something, Minority Report and Beach Chair showcase his ability to deal with real subjects... and this is coming from someone who not even a big fan of his.
  16. I just listened to Kingdom Come and I gotta say that it's a good album. Nothing will match Reasonable Doubt because that's a classic album but Kingdom Come has some really nice tracks on there. The two tracks that are straight garbage are the two songs he did with Usher & Beyonce. My Grade is: B By the way, here's the link DevilsJim: Jay-Z - Kingdom Come
  17. I think it's a combination of things. Certainly the internet has hurt record sales but it really has to do with the industry not promoting good music. You can go to Wal-Mart and get albums for a good price so I don't think it's the economy. It's really about the music and the music just isn't good right now. For the most part... it stinks.
  18. K-Fed apparently did a show here in Chicago at the world famous House Of Blues and the place was just about empty. The House of Blues was sending invites to regular patrons with free complimentary tickets to K-Fed's show. :lolsign:
