Life After MJ: The Year In News

Fans around the world honor Michael Jackson By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY , -A year after Michael Jackson's death caused a worldwide outpouring of shock, tears and tributes, the anniversary of his passing was being marked Friday on a quieter scale, as fans remembered their fallen King of Pop with vigils, prayer and, of course, music. The electric, enigmatic and troubled icon died on June 25, 2009, at age 50 as he was preparing for a series of comeback concerts in London. Dr. Conrad Murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death for administering the powerful anesthetic propofol to Jackson to help the pop star sleep. At Jackson's final resting place at Forest Lawn in Glendale. Calif., hundreds of fans, some weeping, filed past barricades to get close to the mausoleum where Jackson is interred Friday morning. Some carried bouquets, others were armed with cameras to document the moment. Erick Dominguez, 37, a sales rep from Victorville, Calif., wore a black shirt with Jackson's photo that read: "In Loving Memory." "He's been my idol all my life since I can remember. I feel like I haven't had closure," he said, starting to weep from behind dark sunglasses. Yugi Aoki, 33, of Tokyo, came with 13 other Japanese fans of the pop star. They were all wearing sparkling gloves and fedora hats, one of Jackson's signature looks. Aoki smiled as he described how Jackson influenced him: "Michael Jackson changed myself. We love his dancing and songs." Jackson's family members were expected to arrive at the cemetery later in the day, said his brother, Randy Jackson. Across the country in Harlem, pictures of Jackson hung on a wall outside New York's Apollo Theater, where Jackson and his brothers won amateur night in the late 1960s. A sidewalk plaque honored the singer alongside such other legends as James Brown and Smokey Robinson. Since the Apollo helped launch the Jackson 5, it has had a strong connection to the late pop star. After Jackson's death, it became the de facto gathering place for New York fans. It was an emotional though more low-key scene on Friday morning, as Jackson's music blared from boomboxes and passing cars. "We are really honored to have played a part in launching Michael's musical career and to serve as a gathering place for people to come and celebrate his lifetime of achievement," said Jonelle Procope, Apollo president and CEO. Procope placed Jackson's black hat and sequin glove, both from the theater's collection, beside his plaque. D.E. Cayard said he spent 68 days at the Apollo after Jackson's death. He returned Friday, flying in from Miami, to present an artwork as tribute to Jackson. "I want to be among the people that are telling the world that Michael is forever," he said. "Michael is celebration." Elsewhere in Harlem, the AMC Magic Johnson Harlem 9 movie theater screened "This Is It," the documentary about Jackson's preparation for his London concerts, throughout the day. And the Rev. Al Sharpton was to lead a moment of silence in the afternoon. In Gary, Ind., Jackson's hometown, there was to be a tribute at the family home; city officials said they expected Jackson's mother, Katherine Jackson, and his niece, Genevieve Jackson, to show up, along with thousands of others. Katherine Jackson also lent her support to a "Forever Michael" fan event in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Saturday. In Japan, hundreds of fans met at Tokyo Tower to honor Jackson with a candlelight vigil, a gospel concert and more. Some got a chance to see a collection of his possessions, including costumes from his tours and even a 1967 Rolls-Royce Phantom that he used to drive around Los Angeles. "I don't know what to say. Seeing all his things makes it all come back to me," said Yumiko Sasaki, a 48-year-old Tokyo officer worker who has been a Jackson fan since she was 12. "It makes me so sad to think that he is gone. He was wonderful." About 50 guests paid $1,100 each to sleep overnight at the Tokyo landmark, where they had catered food, watched a gospel choir, looked at Jackson memorabilia and danced to Michael Jackson's music before observing a period of silence as the sun rose. But not every memorial for Jackson was to be somber. In France, weekend celebration plans included a concert and tribute show, and other places across the globe, including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, planned parties for the man who embodied dance music. "They want to celebrate his life and music," DJ Jon Quick said of the expected partygoers at club Taj on Friday, where he would play Jackson tunes. On Twitter, "RIPMJ" was one of the most popular topics. Mariah Carey said she was marking the day by watching the video to "You Are Not Alone." "Love and prayers to MJ `King of Pop,'" Carey tweeted. "You will be remembered forever. We miss you." -

Life After Michael Jackson: The Year in News By Jane Boursaw Posted Jun 25th 2010 06:00AM It hardly seems like a year has passed since ambulances were called to the rented Los Angeles home of Michael Jackson, but June 25 marks the one-year anniversary of the pop star's death. He was pronounced dead at a LA hospital after suffering cardiac arrest. So much has happened during those twelve months, not the least of which is that his estate earned $783 million from album and DVD sales, his 50 percent stake in the Sony/ATV music catalog and various publishing deals. Let's take a look at what's happened in the year since his death. Michael Jackson kids His Kids -- Prince Michael, Prince Michael II (Blanket) and Paris. Remember when Jackson used to wrap scarves around his kids' faces to shield them from the prying eyes of the paparazzi? He must be rolling over in his grave at the thought of how visible they've become, beginning with his memorial service on July 7, 2009. Jackson's will named his mother, Katherine, as the guardian of all three children. Last summer, a custody battle arose between Katherine and Jackson's ex-wife Debbie Rowe, the biological mother of Paris and Prince Michael. Rowe was eventually granted visitation rights, and has forged a relationship with Katherine, as well. The will cut out Rowe and his father, Joe Jackson, leaving his $500 million estate in trust for his kids, his mother and various charities. His Personal Physician -- Dr. Conrad Murray. Controversy and scandal have surrounded the doctor since Jackson's death, which was officially ruled a homicide in August of last year. The cause was acute intoxication of the anesthetic propofol combined with other sedatives. Six months later, on Feb. 8, 2010, Dr. Murray was charged with involuntary manslaughter by prosecutors in Los Angeles. He pleaded not guilty, was released on $75,000 bail and is currently awaiting trial. Joe Jackson recently alleged that Murray had been drinking at a strip club hours before he administered the fatal dose of propofol. Murray and his reps have denied this. Cranking Up MJ Tunes on Facebook: Join Us to Remember Wanda SykesThe Estate. As mentioned, Jackson's estate has earned a whopping $783 million in the year since he died. The documentary 'This Is It' was released in theaters in October of 2009 and delved into Jackson's rehearsals for a series of comeback concerts in London. The film has earned $260 million worldwide and is the most successful concert movie ever. In March, the Jackson estate and Sony Music Entertainment announced a $250 million deal to release 10 albums of new and re-issued Jackson material through 2017. The first album of new music is scheduled for a November 2010 release. The Autopsy. On Feb. 8, 2010, a full autopsy was released, confirming that Jackson suffered from the skin pigmentation condition vitiligo, wore a wig, weighed 136 pounds and was covered with small scars on his nose, knee, shoulder, neck, wrists and behind both ears. His Music. In November, Jackson won four posthumous American Music Awards, but was beaten for the Artist of the Year award by Taylor Swift. In February, more than 70 stars, including Miley Cyrus and Barbra Streisand, recorded a new version of 'We Are the World' (co-written by Jackson in 1985) for Haiti earthquake relief. On April 20, the Jackson estate and Cirque du Soleil announced plans for Las Vegas touring and permanent shows, as well as a Jackson-themed nightclub, opening in late 2012. Other Stuff. In September, Jackson was buried in a Renaissance-themed mausoleum near Los Angeles in a private ceremony attended by Elizabeth Taylor, Lisa Marie Presley and 200 other guests and family members. A tribute concert was planned by Jermaine Jackson, but scrapped in December as organizers went bust.

I've never heard of him. I saw that faux dancehall video and wasn't too much of a fan. I watched the video on his site and thought that song was okay. It is weird that he'd be in FP's studio. Has anyone in the US heard of him? Is he a well-respected artist? -
Rappers Surprise Graduation Party DERRIK J. LANG AP posted: 2 HOURS 40 MINUTES AGO PRINT|E-MAILMORE CULVER CITY, Calif. (June 24) -- Dr. Dre and Timbaland went back to school Wednesday night. The rapper-producers shocked students when they appeared at a Culver City High School graduation party. Dr. Dre introduced Timbaland, who performed the tunes "The Way I Are," ''Promiscuous Girl," ''Carry Out" and "Say Something" on a stage inside the school's gymnasium. Students invited had no idea the hip-hop masterminds were the guests of honor. "When we walked in, we were like, 'Whoa. Is this a second prom?' " said 17-year-old junior Saul Salmeron. The surprise performance was sponsored by Hewlett-Packard and Interscope Records, who have partnered with the aim of improving digital sound quality. The promotional event, which was recorded for an online documentary, also featured free food, photos and a raffle of HP gear. The company said it was donating $10,000 worth of computer equipment to the school. "Y'all got a curfew?" Timbaland asked the audience at one point. Students held up their camera phones and gathered around the stage to get a glimpse of Timbaland and Dr. Dre, who sneaked a peek of the crowd before he took the stage. Dr. Dre, who is currently working on his next album, did not perform with labelmate Timbaland. Is a possible collaboration is in the works? "We should be so lucky," said Jimmy Iovine, chairman of Interscope, Geffen and A&M Records, who attended Wednesday's event. "I can only get them so close. The rest is up to them."

Album sales for the week ending June 20th

LOL. Visqo, what is your obsession with Drake? Even tho' you only say u like 3 songs off his album, you mention him in every post. -
I think that not having Dr. Dre with his hand in the pot so much was also a really good idea. His sound has been so contained for most of his career ever since 2000. This album is open and the music just breathes.

That is fresh! I love it. A few months ago I almost bought a blue light JJ+FP logo I saw online. I didn't get it due to money and haven't seen it since. I am getting my house in order. I can't wait to frame my huge JJ+FP posters. That huge logo would be dope. -

I agree. This IS his best album since The Marshall Mathers LP. Hands down. This album is dope. I've been listening 2 it ever since I got it. The beats are dope. Nearly all of them are Hip-Hop, yet with a mainstream sensibility. Lyrically he has grown, matured, and stretched. Vocally his a mix of old and new. Alot of the annoying voices and flows are gone (tho' his never had one of the best voices in rap). The album has an energy and a fun side to it that really makes it stand out to me. Congratz Em!!

I didn't get the album today like I planned. I will get it tomorrow tho.' I haven't listened 2 it yet. Usually I listen 2 albums 1st online but I know it's gonna be good. I might peep some of it 2nite cuz I'm not that patient.

The Roots are at 'Crossroads' on "How I Got Over"

I peeped the snippets on CDnow...in my opinion it's their best album since Thing Fall Apart back in 1998. It's not as good as their 1st 3 but it's good and that's all that matters. I hardly ever listened 2 all of their other albums. -
DIPSET PUT BEEF ASIDE...REUNION
JumpinJack AJ replied to JumpinJack AJ's topic in Caught in the Middle
Ha, I've kinda like Cam'ron...especially when he 1st came out. I liked half of the trax off of his 2002 album. Juelz Santana was kinda nice on the mic for one of the popular rappers but I thought some of the beats I heard him on were week and his music was at times, similar to the common crap on the radio. I've never liked Jim Jones. I just had 2 scroll up to get Freaky Zekey's name cuz I don't remember anything from him. I think the Dipset thing contributed to Cam'ron's music getting weaker. -
Good news for his estate... ------------------------------------------- Tuesday 6/22/10 King of Pop's estate has rebounded since death By RYAN NAKASHIMA LOS ANGELES -The money is rolling in. The bills are being paid. And all those people who said Michael Jackson might earn more in death than in life are being proved right. Like the estates of Elvis Presley and Yves Saint Laurent, Jackson's has grown immensely since he died on June 25, 2009. Without Jackson's lavish spending sprees, and with the help of new revenue pouring in from nostalgia over the reign of the King of Pop, estate co-executors John Branca and John McClain have dramatically turned around Jackson's finances. A kingdom that was on the verge of collapse from more than $500 million in debt now looks to be able to support his three children and his mother and donate healthily to children's charities. The estate has earned more than $250 million in the year since he died. Executors used some of that to pay off $70 million in debt, including the $5 million mortgage on the Jackson family compound in Encino, part of Los Angeles. The interest payments on the remaining debt are now covered by a steady flow of cash. "They're off to a spectacularly good start," said Lance Grode, a former Jackson lawyer and adjunct professor at the University of Southern California Law School. He added, however, "there's a long way to go before they pay off all of their debts." A rundown of deals suggests that Jackson's fortune will be even bigger than could have been realized by a planned series of comeback concerts: — A posthumous deal to sell unreleased Jackson recordings with Sony Music guaranteed $200 million over seven years. It has already brought $125 million to the estate. — The film "This Is It," based on his final concert rehearsal footage, grossed $252 million worldwide. Sony Pictures paid the estate $60 million in advance, with an undisclosed amount more to come from DVD sales. — Licensing deals on merchandise sold by Universal Music Group's Bravado unit and a new dance game by Ubisoft Entertainment brought in $26 million in advances. More is possible if unit sales are high. — The Mijac Music catalog of copyrights, on songs that Jackson wrote, generated $25 million in the past year, thanks to heavy airplay on radio stations and song and album sales. — Music publisher Sony/ATV, the copyright holder of the Beatles' and other artists' songs, posted double-digit percentage revenue gains in the year through March. That netted Jackson's estate, which owns a 50 percent stake, $11 million. — Other income, including from a rerelease of Jackson's autobiography, "Moon Walk," and sales of commemorative tickets to his canceled concerts, brought in another $25 million. The tally does not include a deal with Cirque du Soleil for shows inspired by Jackson's music, in which the estate will share half the costs and profits when the performances begin in late 2011. Nor does it account for a deal in the works to nearly double the estate's income from Sony/ATV. That cash goes to pay down most of Jackson's remaining debt. According to co-executor Branca, Jackson's longtime lawyer and business manager, the new deals follow a script the two set out shortly before the singer died. "When I met with him before he died we went through an agenda. John (McClain) and I are really executing on that," Branca told The Associated Press. "We're doing the things we think Michael would have wanted." Several people have been paid for overdue bills after spending years trying to track the singer down. Others who haven't yet been paid say they have been treated professionally by the estate; a night and day change from his old regime. "We couldn't (collect) until unfortunately he passed away," said Joseph Akhtarzad, a Jackson family friend who owns the Santa Monica-based Video & Audio Center. Last month, the estate settled a $128,429 tab with Akhtarzad for electronics goods owed since 2007. Thomas Mesereau, who successfully defended Jackson in his 2005 child molestation trial, said the estate recently paid his law firm $341,452 for services provided after the trial, when Jackson moved to Bahrain. The firm revived its claim in September because it gave up dealing with Jackson's previous managers. If Elvis is any example, a moderate level of earnings could flow into Jackson's estate for decades. Sony Music said more than 31 million Jackson albums have sold worldwide since he died, a stratospheric number for a music industry in decline. With 8.3 million albums sold in the U.S., he was the top-selling artist in 2009, easily topping Taylor Swift's 4.6 million. It marked the most albums sold in a year since Usher topped 8 million in 2004, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Even since the start of this year, Jackson songs have been played on American radio stations 140,000 times, about 10 times the pace before he died, according to Nielsen. Nearly a million Jackson albums have sold this year and a new album of unreleased material is set to hit stores in November, roughly in tandem with a new video game in which fans can mimic his signature moves. "In the year that Michael has gone, we realize how incredibly talented he was," said Marty Bandier, the chief executive of Sony/ATV. "The guy was the King of Pop and more." — AP Entertainment Writer Anthony McCartney contributed to this story.

I thought the last Roots album was awful. The only reason I bought it was because Jazzy Jeff was cuttin' on it. I vowed I wouldn't ever by another Roots album just because I was fan...only if it was good. I peeped the album online and i WILL be getting it. More than half of it sounded really good. -
I was gonna pick up the album 2day but wasn't able to. It's on sale for only $7.99 at Best Buy this week. It's $10 at WalMart. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keith Sweat 'Ridin' Solo' on New Album and TV Debut We tend to reach deep into history when we speak of our "legends," but almost halfway through 2010, we can't ignore that the 1980s and '90s birthed a slew of talent who went on to inspire those who would come after them. Keith Sweat can easily be categorized as a R&B laurel, who, along with Teddy Riley, made New Jack Swing a resolute movement. After churning out the hits and releasing six platinum-selling albums from 1987 to 1998, Sweat moved aside in the new millennium to make way for the new school. But now the 48-year-old is back with a full plate of goodies, including his new 'Ridin' Solo' album, which hits stores today. "I'm trying to add to the catalog," Sweat told The BoomBox, while insisting that 'Ridin' Solo' isn't a major departure from what his hardcore fans expect. When The BoomBox chopped it up with Sweat there was no elephant in the room. The singer is well aware that his latest project is a reintroduction of sorts. "I feel a real resurgence right now. Sometimes you have to reinvent yourself in all areas," Sweat explains. Sweat isn't just talking about himself when it comes to "reinvention." Aside from releasing a new album, the singer/producer is debuting a reality series. On 'Keith Sweat's Platinum House' -- premiering June 28 on Centric -- Sweat will offer support to R&B group Dru Hill as they attempt to revive their fledgling career. "We have our favorite acts like SWV, New Edition we all grew up listening to them and they have a wide fan base, [but] those veteran groups are not in radio demographics. So you don't hear about them as much and then they end up falling in to adult contemporary, which has the 18-34 mainstream missing out because, radio is so concerned about whatever song is hot now and they feel that these artist are not relevant," the singer explains. With his own radio show on WBLS, Sweat knows what he's talking about. As the host of the station's 'Quiet Storm' program, currently dubbed 'Sweat Hotel,' the he knows exactly how the industry works and he's using his new projects to bridge the gap. "My TV show and radio program can connect the fans back with these artists, find out what they're doing and keep them relevant," Sweat said. As for his new project, 'Ridin' Solo,' and Dru Hill's first album in eight years, 'Indrupendence Day,' Sweat wholeheartedly believes in resurrecting a career via good music. "People may say you're over in the game," Sweat admits. "...but you are never over until there's no breath in your body."

I was never a fan of Dipset but I know a few people on this board are. There's was a video in the article. I imagine u can look it up on YouTube. It's corny but I'm sure fans will like 2 see it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dipset Put Beef Aside and Map Out Anticipated Reunion After much back and forth and buzz, Cam'ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana and Freekey Zekey gave breath to reunion rumors when pictures hit the 'net of the foursome reuniting for a video filmed at a construction site on June 11. It's been four years since the crew went their separate ways due to beef that appeared too deep for reconciliation. On the surface, the riff seemed to come to a head when Cam verbally attacked 50 Cent with the 2007 diss track 'Curtis.' Like most hip-hop beefs, the public was made aware of the issues within the crew when Juelz and Jones attempted to stay out of Cam's beef with 50, before eventually joining the Queens, N.Y.-bred rapper on stage during a New York concert later that year. Jones has since revealed that the original beef between he and Cam began prior to '07. Things got stickier in 2008 when Juelz requested to be released from his Diplomats contract in order to release music on Def Jam. Finally released from his contractual obligations with Dipset but hurt by remarks made by Cam -- who alleged that he "sold" Juelz for $2 million -- the crew would not be seen altogether until the recent photos taken at this video shoot. Check out the footage to see full-fledged proof that the newly reunited crew have big plans for the future.

Lovetowill is a member from the Will Smith Sony Message Board from back in the day who pretended to be 3 different people. She pretended to be her own best friend and told us how one of them died in a car accident on her way to see Men In Black II at the movie theater. She posted this after not visiting the board for a month or so. Someone did some research and realized that they posted something AFTER they were supposed to have passed away. After the confronting them, she fessed up to be 3 different people on the board. I forget the other names. I remember we were all pretty mad at them. -
