Okay....there's already conflicting info... ------------------------------------------------------------------ Los Angeles – According to sources, rap mogul Suge Knight was released from West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station where he was held about two hours ago just after posting bail. Suge was arrested earlier today on murder charges in a fatal hit-and-run in Los Angeles after intentionally running over two men with his pick up truck, killing old time friend Terry Carter. Sources tell us Suge posted the $2 million dollar bail he was held on, but it seems as his freedom didn’t last very long. Suge Knight was found dead approximately an hour ago on a road in the East Los Angeles area. Police found him laying on the road with three bullet wounds — one to the chest and two in the head. He was pronounced dead on the scene. No suspect has been arrested yet in connection with the homicide. More details to come as they become available. http://infossip.com/breaking-rap-mogul-suge-knight-found-dead/

WHOA!! Just saw this on TMZ! It is being reported that Death Row Records C.E.O. Marion "Suge" Knight was murdered in the jail where he was being held for murder. Investigators say Knight's cell mate DeAntwan Pardin, 29, stabbed Knight to death with a hidden pocket knife. Although authorities are not sure what caused Pardin to murder Knight, it is believed Knight’s gang affiliation and rap personality might have played a role. http://tmznews.mobi/rap-mogul-marion-suge-knight-found-dead-in-his-cell

MARIAH CAREY REUNITES WITH L.A. REID AT EPIC RECORDS
JumpinJack AJ replied to JumpinJack AJ's topic in Caught in the Middle
The Inside Story of How Mariah Carey and L.A. Reid Reunited (at a Fraction of Her Former $80 Million Deal) By Shirley Halperin and Andrew Hampp | January 30, 2015 11:00 AM EST Illustration by John Ueland Just months shy of the 10-year anniversary of The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey and Antonio "L.A." Reid are prepping another kind of comeback. According to multiple sources, the 45-year-old singer is returning to Sony Music through Epic Records, where Reid has served as chairman since 2011. A nearly finalized multi-album deal would see Carey's first new material through the label since 1999's Rainbow, beginning with a greatest-hits set to coincide with her upcoming residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Dubbed "#1's," the concert series booked by Creative Artists Agency begins May 6 and will include all 18 of Carey's Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers, from 1990's "Vision of Love" to 2008's "Touch My Body." (An Epic representative declined to comment.) Although Carey left Sony on tumultuous terms -- she signed a four-album, $80 million deal with EMI's Virgin Records in 2000, eager to distance herself from ex-husband and former Sony Music head Tommy Mottola -- there are plenty of reasons why rejoining makes sense now. Doug Morris, current chairman/CEO of Sony Music, brought Carey to Island Def Jam in 2003 when he was running Universal Music Group. Reid, then head of Island Def Jam, oversaw her Mimi-powered 2005 comeback. Joey Arbagey, a collaborator of Carey's during the making of the six-times platinum Mimi, is now executive vp A&R at Epic. And of course there is her massive Sony catalog: Carey's seven studio releases, a live EP and four hits packages have sold a combined 43.9 million albums, according to Nielsen Music, including the septuple-platinum Music Box and Daydream. Her output for UMG, which spanned six albums, has sold just 9.7 million by comparison. But while Carey's legacy is undisputed, her recent stumbles have not gone unnoticed. For starters, her thrice-delayed album Me...I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse through Def Jam failed to deliver a top 10 Hot 100 hit (Miguel duet "#Beautiful" peaked at No. 15 in 2013) and posted her lowest sales to date, with 117,000 sold. She went through a series of managers, too, including longtime collaborator Jermaine Dupri, producer Randy Jackson and former Def Jam executive Kevin Liles, whom she most recently retained as a consultant. According to an insider privy to terms of Carey's new contract, her recent turmoil, which includes a pending divorce from husband of six years Nick Cannon, scared away most other suitors. "Sony's was the only deal on the table, and it came in far lower than she expected." How low? Carey "was asking for a $3 million advance; she didn't get it." (Carey is represented by attorney Donald Passman, who didn't return Billboard's request for comment.) Still, even critics concede that the best place for the diva to try again is with Reid, who's not only of her generation, in that his star rose during the '90s, but has of late been on a hot streak, notching hits by Meghan Trainor (eight weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100), Bobby Shmurda and Fifth Harmony. Carey also ended 2014 on a positive note, selling out a six-night residency at New York's Beacon Theatre for a series of Christmas concerts that grossed a combined $1.5 million in Billboard Boxscore receipts. That turnout should help build buzz for her upcoming Vegas stint, where she'll follow in the footsteps of Celine Dion, Elton John, Cher, Bette Midler and Shania Twain to become the latest draw to the 4,300-capacity theater. Says Elvis Duran, morning host for New York radio station Z100: "There wasn't tremendous support for her last album, but there is always a run for residencies with a buzz. Mariah and Vegas make tons of sense." This article first appeared in the Feb. 7 issue of Billboard. -
I was waiting for more details on this story...it looks like they're here. We all know Suge's past, so it's refreshing to read that he was trying to squash his beef with Dre. It makes you wonder if this incident was truly an accident or not. It clearly wasn't his plan A since he's not the one who started either altercation that day. Suge Knight’s Beef With Dr. Dre Led To Fatal Hit-And-Run Jan 30th, '15 by Emmanuel C.M. Getty Images Suge Knight’s longtime beef with Dr. Dre is reportedly what sparked the fatal hit-and-run that left Terry Carter dead. Suge went to the set where they were filming the commercial for Straight Outta Compton in order put an end to his beef with his rival. However, he got into a shoving match with Dre’s security. Off duty cops saw the altercation and ordered them to separate. TMZ reports that a short time later Carter came to Suge and told him that Dre contacted him and wanted to meet so they can work out their difference. Believing it was a peaceful meeting, the former CEO of Death Row Records took him up on that offer. However, things went left and Suge was jumped before he even got out the car. The main suspected assailant that attacked Suge when he was in his truck is the other victim injured in the hit-and-run, actor Cle “Bone” Sloan. Then the hit-and-run happened, which resulted in Suge running over Mr. Carter’s head and killing him. A close family member of Terry Carter told TMZ that Carter was “a sacrificial lamb.” The relative said Suge knew Terry was behind his truck but was out for blood, purposely reversing his truck to run over Bone thinking he was the only person behind him. Instead it was his friend Carter who was killed. The relative reiterated that it wasn’t an accident but flat out murder. Suge turned himself in to authorities earlier this morning. Knight’s lawyer, James Blatt, told reporters it was an accident and Suge feared for his life. Blatt said that the murder charge could be dropped as early as next week. Suge Knight is being held in a downtown L.A. jail. His bail is set at $2 million dollars. http://www.xxlmag.com/news/2015/01/suge-knight-dr-dre-terry-carter/

It's coming in April. I've known about this for awhile, but didn't want to post about it until there were more details. Well, details aren't emerging yet, so I decided to share it anyway. On April 14th, a new JJ+FP compilation is coming. For those of you who aren't familiar with Playlist, they basically put together greatest hits and "best of" compilations, often using the term "the hits and fan favorites." They are often priced very reasonably and can be found in FYE, Best Buy, and Walmart. They vary when it comes to how interesting they are. They used to only be sold in cardboard cases, but in recent years they've moved on to traditional plastic CD cases and include proper inserts that include pictures, write-ups, and credits. Sometimes the pictures are kind of rare. The music is what it's mostly about. Some of the trackinglistings like the Destiny's Child one is nothing but the hits. It's nice to have them compiled together, but it's a little useless since they already have a greatest hits album, plus most of their albums are easy to find and priced well. Then you have albums like they've done for R. Kelly, Common Sense, and the Fugees, which contain rare b-sides and remixes...some never before released on CD. I guess we have to wait to see the artwork and the tracklisting, but hopefully they'll be quite a few surprises on it. It'll be nice buying a new JJ+FP album and seeing one on the shelves. Here's it's listing on Amazon... http://www.amazon.com/Playlist-Very-Best-Jazzy-Fresh/dp/B00QTVK892/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422670915&sr=8-1&keywords=jazzy+jeff+fresh+prince

I hope great things happen with this. The Emancipation of Mimi is one of few modern-day classics. Mariah Carey is the kind of artist that needs to be on top. I'm so annoyed her latest album isn't doing well, because it's easily one of the best R&B albums in recent years. It's her best since Emancipation, and then Butterfly. Here's the article... 1.30.2015 News Mariah Carey Reunites with L.A. Reid at Epic Records Mariah Carey and Antonio “L.A.” Reid belong together. The pop diva is reuniting with her former label boss at Sony Music via Epic Records, reports Billboard. Reid helped bring Carey to Island Def Jam in 2003 and oversaw her 2005 comeback album The Emancipation of Mimi before he departed the label in 2011. However, her Epic deal is a far cry from her record-setting $80 million contract with Virgin Records. “Sony’s was the only deal on the table, and it came in far lower than she expected,” a source tells Billboard. Carey “was asking for a $3 million advance; she didn’t get it.” The singer’s most recent album, 2014’s Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse, has posted her lowest sales to date with 117,000 sold. Carey will join the Epic roster which includes Future, Ciara, Meghan Trainor, Bobby Shmurda, and Fifth Harmony. As part of her comeback, Mariah will also launch her “#1’s” residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in May and is planning a re-release of her 1998 album #1’s later this year. http://www.rap-up.com/2015/01/30/mariah-carey-reunites-with-la-reid-at-epic-records/

Getting a Valuation on an LP?
JumpinJack AJ replied to the magnificent's topic in Caught in the Middle
I've always wondered the same thing. Let me know what you find out. I feel like a lot of old stuff that's been long out of print can properly be given a value. A lot of the times I imagine it's really subjective when it comes to music. Music doesn't often hold a true value. However, when I look up the 2Pac and Michael Jackson stuff on ebay, I see that I could be rich if I sold it...lol. -
AND IN THIS CORNER... INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM
JumpinJack AJ replied to JumpinJack AJ's topic in Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince
I have the instrumental version of He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper on vinyl, but it's a little warped and doesn't play great. I've never seen a second one, so I'm still happy to have it. -
Looking for a little prayer support here. To be vague, my job situation is getting pretty inconvenient. I know this isn't where I want to stay forever, but I'm caught between trying to make it better and finding something else. I never finished college, and since I'm into performing and photography, there really aren't jobs in my area that pay the bills in that field. Also I have three speeding tickets over the past two years that have accumulated enough points that my license could be suspended. I thought all of these was behind me, but apparently not. I have a hearing and I'm hoping all of this will get tossed out. I'm not a constant speeder, but I in the past year I had a knack for only speeding crazy when cops were around.

Anyone who's been following them knows they never really broke up. They have just quietly worked over the years and done a few shows here and there. Back during K-Ci + Jo Jo's 2000 album, they had those two Jodeci bonus tracks and have been working on the next project ever since. A few people will remember this epic H-Town/Jodeci/Pretty Ricky collabo from 2011. I'm not a fan of Pretty Ricky, but they didn't ruin this song like I expected when I first year the song years ago.

Here's the new single "Every Moment" Here's their single from last year with B.O.B. And their (lip-synced) Soul Train 2014 Awards performance...

Jodeci Returns! Legendary R&B Quartet Signs New Deal With Epic, Drops New Single “Every Moment” Middle-aged women everywhere are smiling. Jodeci, the 90’s R&B group that they grew up loving, are back. JoJo, K-Ci, DeVante and Mr. Dalvin have inked a new deal with Epic records, releasing the single titled “Every Moment.” Jodeci’s triple-platinum debut Forever My Lady came out back in 1991, and helped to define the R&B sound of the 90’s. The group was originally signed to Uptown Records and worked under the direction of Sean “Puffy” Combs. After releasing three highly successful albums, the group disbanded in 1996, and was plagued by internal drama. The group recently reunited after a decade at the 2014 Soul Train Awards in Las Vegas, which aired on BET, back in November. “Every Moment” will impact at radio on February 9. http://breakinartist.com/jodeci-returns-legendary-rb-quartet-signs-new-deal-epic-drops-new-single-every-moment/

Some of you may remember her 2012 song that features Jeff...

BriaMarie is dropping a new single called "Tell The DJ." I'm not sure what the connection might be to Jeff, but the single's image has his face on it (in A Tribe Called Quest 'Midnight Marauder" way). BriaMarie works closely with Carvin Haggins, formally of A Touch of Jazz. In this short video, you get a taste of the music, which sounds great, but it doesn't exactly call for a DJ to be featured on it. Hopefully I'm wrong. She writes this about the song... Good Morning Beam Team! I pray that you're great this morning and your day is even better! You may or may not know that I LOVE good surprises, so today's surprise is...NEW MUSIC! :) After a little over a year, I am releasing a new single. "Tell The DJ" is the first single from my upcoming debut album entitled, Freshman. "Tell The DJ" will be available on iTunes, Amazon and more, next Tuesday, February 3rd. I'm very excited about this one. Think 90's Bad Boy with a California vibe. Eee! :D Click this link or the picture below for a short video of my music producer, Carvin Haggins talking a little about the project. ("Tell The DJ" also happens to be playing in the background :D) Have a great day! Love, BriaMarie

They just put out the video for "Wash It Down." It's artsy, but isn't overly "busy," which I think lets you focus on the lyrics. Check it out...

For the upcoming album, released May 2nd, Forever, they have re-recorded. It lacks the soul of the 1994 smash, but I think I like it better than all of the commercial R&B songs they've put out so far. Hear it here... http://www.bet.com/news/music/2015/01/27/exclusive-listen-to-immature-s-reworked-single-never-lie.html

Monica Announces New Album, Code Red Singer reveals she's been back in the studio with Polow Da Don. By Moriba Cummings Posted: 01/24/2015 09:46 AM EST R&B songstress Monica is ready to return to music and her eighth studio album is already in production, with a title confirmed. Reportedly set for a release later this year, the follow-up to 2012's New Life is dubbed Code Red. The Grammy-winning singer made the announcement on her Polow Da Don is lending his magic to the album's creation, elaborating on a recent recording session for the LP. Looks like Mo is working with new talent on this project as, in the photo, she can be seen in the studio with up-and-coming singer/songwriter Jo'zzy. Monica and Polow, who are actually cousins, have been working on Code Red for some time. Back in August 2014, the singer took to Trey Songz.

In case you haven't checked the store at DJ Jazzy Jeff's website in awhile, he has a few pressings of And In This Corner..., the instrumental album, pressed in 1989 for promotion of the album. It cost a good bit, but I had some some Christmas money to spend and had to seize the moment. Like all the vinyl on his website, he autographed it and personalized it. His crew was cool enough to include the Summertime: Volume 4 mixtape, Vinyl Destination stickers, and a coupon for my next purchase. Super hyped to give this a listen!

The singer is set to lose her home for defaulting on mortgage payment Justin Dwayne Joseph Posted: 01/19/2015 10:00 AM EST Maxine Jones' life after En Vogue hasn't been no crystal stair... According to theJasmineBRAND.com, the 53-year-old R&B singer is set to lose her home, following a federal court order that grants the bank that owns her property, the right to move forward with foreclosure proceedings, following her failure to meet her mortgage payments. On December 22, the bank filed documents, explaining that Jones took out a $215,000 loan with them back in 2006 to purchase her Palmyra, Virgina property. They claim that she owes a total of $208,025.13, and that amount continues to grow with interest. Jones filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on December 18, 2014 in a Virginia federal court, claiming that she is $298,900 in debt, but only has roughly $172,000 in assets. Her debts include $212,000 on her Virginia home, a $32,000 judgement against her won by a private school, $2,000 in unpaid taxes to the state of Virginia, $800 in unpaid telephone bills, $17,000 in unpaid attorney's bills, over $1,000 in medical bills, $22,000 in unpaid taxes owed to the state of California, $440 to T-Mobile, and $539 to Victoria’s Secret. Despite filing for bankruptcy, Jones was to continue making her mortgage payment of $2,052 a month. She reportedly failed to make payments in October and November. The decision to move forward with the foreclosure came on January 13, three days before Jones' birthday (January 16). Jones, who is best known as a founding member of En Vogue, left the group in 2011. She was later sued by her former bandmates Terry Ellis and Cindy Heron, and stripped of using the group's name for business.

This is pretty nasty. I feel shade between them will keep any of them from successful again. NEVER GONNA GET IT: En Vogue Lawsuit Ends With Two Members Stripped Of Using Group's Name By Justin Joseph Posted: 04/02/2013 12:49 PM EDT Filed Under En Vogue What's Good in Music? Certainly not nasty legal battle between the ladies of En Vogue. According to TMZ, a judge has granted founding members Cindy Herron and Terry Ellis the exclusive right to use the group's name while performing and touring. This after a long battle with former group members and founding members, Maxine Jones and Dawn Robinson, that began in 2012. The group's squabbles began when Herron and Ellis sued Jones and Robinson for the name and $1 million dollars in damages, claiming the two former members were touring illegally using the "EnVogue" name---Cindy and Terry own the LLC. The judgement, in favor of the Cindy and Terry, officially strips the other members of using the name. However because damages were not able to be proven, the million dollar lawsuit was not granted.

Whitney Houston's family: Lifetime movie is 'disrespectful and dishonest' By Jean Bentley Jan 16th, 2015 Whitney Houston's sister, Pat Houston, is not pleased with Lifetime's movie, "Whitney," about the late singer's life (and death). Houston, who manages her sister's estate, issued a statement speaking out against the film she believes is "wrong." "It is easy to turn a blind eye to other people if you're not careful. But the needs of Whitney's family matter," she writes. "We matter. We're still here. Why wasn't there a call to myself, Gary, Cissy or even her daughter? Why deny selected members of the family an advanced copy of the film?" Houston calls the release of the film "a disappointment that any of us who loved her could do without. This creative pursuit at the expense of the integrity of such an iconic woman, who is voiceless today, reeks of condemnation and deceit. It reeks of enslavement to an industry that will likely do the same to you one day." Then, after dissing Lifetime's low-budget movies ("Lifetime is notorious for making bad biopics of deceased celebrities"), Houston then alludes to director Angela Bassett. "Misrepresenting the term friendship to advance an agenda is not only disrespectful and dishonest but a slap in the face to her true and loyal friends," she writes. "I question the morality of the making of this because of the lack of experience knowing Whitney's life." She continues, "Never would Whitney allow her story to be told by an inexperienced team and how naive of anyone to think otherwise, unless you're caught up in illusions of grandeur that you can just do anything and people will accept it. This made for TV movie is certainly not a trailer to Whitney's life story." http://www.zap2it.com/blogs/whitney_houstons_family_lifetime_movie_disrespectful_dishonest-2015-01
