Will, Jaden Smith arrive in Taiwan to promote 'After Earth' Taipei, May 2 (CNA) Hollywood star Will Smith and his 15-year-old son and young actor Jaden were greeted by screaming fans in Taiwan on Thursday as the pair arrived to promote their new film "After Earth." The father-son pair arrived from Japan late in the evening to dozens of fans waiting at Taipei Songshan Airport. Smiling, the Smiths waved and shook hands with the crowds and signed autographs for many of them. The 44-year-old superstar and his son then headed to their hotel in Taipei, where they were also dozens of waiting fans. Smith, wearing a grey top, approached the screaming fans briefly to sign an autograph. He then smiled and waved at the crowd before walking into the hotel. It is the first visit for Smith and his son. Tsai Li-chih, a 22-year-old movie lover who traveled from southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung to see Will Smith, told CNA he looks forward to the 3-D special effects in "After Earth," the oversized animals that endanger human beings, the bond between the father-son pair and their acting. "I want to see how they fight difficulty together," said Tsai, who described Will Smith as an actor who could take on any role. "He could be moving, as in 'The Pursuit of Happyness,' funny and cool as in 'Men in Black,' and serious as in 'I Am Legend,' said Tsai, who prepared 13 posters he had hoped the star could autographed for him. "We are movie fans and it's rare for U.S. or European movie stars to come to Taiwan," said Meilin Chen, 24, also among the fans waiting outside of the hotel. "We don't have a chance to go abroad, so we came here to see our idol," said Chen, who came to see the Hollywood star with her friend. The Taiwan visit is part of an Asia promotional tour for the science-fiction thriller that will be released locally in June. During their stay, the Smiths will meet with fans in Taipei's vibrant Xinyi shopping district on the evening of May 3. The Taipei 101 tower, which dominates the area, will display the film's title in lights that night. On May 4, the actors will host an international news conference on the film at Le Meridien Taipei hotel, which will be broadcast live on the Yahoo!Taiwan Celebrity Entertainment channel. Later that day, the Smiths will attend a charity event sponsored by the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families at Taipei 101, and pray with local youths there for protection of the Earth and the natural environment. Before departing Taiwan on the evening of May 5, Jaden will join with Mandopop singer J.J. Lin at Breeze Center in Taipei to promote products that they have jointly endorsed. The Smiths are scheduled to head to South Korea after Taiwan. "After Earth," set 1,000 years in the future, stars the two Smiths as father-and-son Cypher and Kitai Raige. The film depicts how teenage Kitai and his estranged father, Gen. Cypher Raige, must learn to work together and trust each other in order to return to their home in Nova Prime, a planet light years away from Earth, after their ship crash lands on the abandoned Earth. It is the second film in which the father and son appear together.
