EXCLUSIVE: Overbrook Entertainment and Roc Nation will lend their clout to the Realside Productions/De Films Aiguille-produced documentary Free Angela & All Political Prisoners, which was directed by Shola Lynch. They will become executive producers on a film that premieres at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival and marks the 40th anniversary of the acquittal of Angela Davis on charges of murder, kidnapping and conspiracy. The docu was produced by Carole Lambert, Shola Lynch, Carine Ruszniewski, and Sidra Smith. The documentary chronicles Angela Davis’ activism that implicated her in charges of attempted kidnapping and murder. It features interviews with Davis, her lawyers, FBI agents assigned to the case, and journalists who covered one of the most volatile trials of the ’60s. Davis’ imprisonment sparked a worldwide movement for her freedom as a political prisoner, while she was simultaneously being labeled a terrorist. The film wrestles with the meaning of political freedom in a democracy negotiated between the people and its government. “We at Overbrook Entertainment are very proud to support this intriguing documentary about the life of Angela Davis. Michael Clarke Duncan, star of such movies as "The Green Mile" and "The Whole Nine Yards," passed away this morning. He was 54. According to our sources, his passing came very suddenly. We're told his fiancee, Omarosa Manigault, was with him in his hospital room in Los Angeles and left for a short period of time. When she returned ... he had died. Our sources say Omarosa's mother was with him when he passed. Duncan's rep tells TMZ the actor never fully recovered from the myocardial infarction he suffered on July 13. As TMZ first reported, Omarosa found Duncan in cardiac arrest and performed CPR and was able to resuscitate him before calling 911. The rep tells us, "[Omarosa] Manigault is grateful for all of your prayers and asks for privacy at this time. Celebrations of his life, both private and public, will be announced at a later date." Duncan was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of John Coffey in "The Green Mile." 'The Redemption of Cain' a Go at Sony With Will Smith's Overbrook Producing (Exclusive) Sony Pictures Entertainment is moving forward with “The Redemption of Cain,” an epic retelling of the Biblical tale of sibling rivalry. The project has been greenlit and is scheduled to begin filming in July 2013, a person familiar with the deal told TheWrap. The film, which tells the story of Cain and Abel with a vampiric twist, will shoot in London and Jordan with the exteriors shot in Morocco. Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment is producing the film. Francine Maisler is coming on to cast the film in the next few weeks. Reports surfaced earlier this summer saying Smith wanted to direct the film. Two years ago, he was reportedly going to star in and produce the project, which was then called “Legend of Cain,” for Overbrook, based on a script by Caleeb Pinkett.
