1978: 'Queen of Disco' Donna Summer performs onstage in 1978. Los Angeles (CNN) -- Donna Summer, the "Queen of Disco" whose hits included "Hot Stuff," "Bad Girls," "Love to Love You Baby" and "She Works Hard for the Money," has died, a representative said Thursday. She was 63. There was no immediate information about the cause of death. Summer first rose to fame the mid-'70s, thanks to "Love to Love You Baby." The song, with Summer's whispered vocals and orgasmic groans supported by heavily synthesized backing tracks, helped define the mid-'70s disco trend and hit No. 2 in 1976. Summer followed the song with such hits as "I Feel Love," "Last Dance" and a disco-fied version of the Richard Harris hit "MacArthur Park," which outdid Harris' version by hitting No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart. It was Summer's first of four chart-toppers. But with her 1979 album "Bad Girls," Summer broke out of the disco mold as the genre, which had become renewed by the success of the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack, was feeling a backlash. "Bad Girls" demonstrated Summer's vocal and stylistic range and produced two No. 1 hits, "Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girls," as well as a Top 10 ballad, "Dim All the Lights." However, Summer had some trouble adjusting to the changing times. Her next album, "The Wanderer," went for more of a rock feel. It produced a Top 10 hit in the title track but fared relatively poorly on the charts -- especially after the success of "Bad Girls," a double album that spent five weeks at No. 1. It wasn't until 1983's "She Works Hard for the Money," which became a ubiquitous video as well as a big radio hit, that Summer's fame approached its late '70s zenith. http://edition.cnn.com/2012/05/17/showbiz/donna-summer-dead/index.html ----- RIP Donna

Emma Thompson pens Annie script for Willow Smith Emma Thompson has confirmed she is writing a new, modern version of the musical Annie. Will Smith is producing the movie as a vehicle to star his 11-year-old daughter Willow Smith, while Jay-Z is in charge of the music and will write new tracks for the musical. "I think it's a very good combination," Emma Thompson said. "We're looking for directors so the management will come up with a director in the next week or two weeks." Last year Glee creator Ryan Murphy was rumoured to be in the frame as a possible director. "Then I'll do some work with them and we're hoping to shoot next year, so I'm very excited," she added. Modern Annie The most enduring vision of Annie comes from the 1982 film version that starred Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks and Aileen Quinn as the young orphan from the title. Emma Thompson confirmed again that Willow Smith was set to play a new Annie when filming starts in 2013 before adding "that's if she doesn't get too tall". The film will be set in modern-day New York with a selection of new songs added. "That was what was so great about it," Thompson said. "Some songs nobody liked so I ditched them." She couldn't remember the names of the axed songs but when asked if Tomorrow was safe, Thompson said "that's in, weirdly". Thompson stars alongside Will Smith in Men in Black 3 but the pair met on an earlier film project. "I know Will from before because I did a little bit on I Am Legend with him and we got on very well." The Oscar-winning actress and screenwriter did joke that she was "so modern" to be working with Jay-Z and the Smith family. "I hope you like it, it should be really really great," she ended. http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/18098749

Will Smith: Willow crushed me with parenting snub Will Smith was "crushed" when his 11-year-old daughter called him "irresponsible" for losing her cats. The Hollywood star has Willow and 13-year-old son Jaden with his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. Both the kids are in the entertainment business, with Will admitting Willow needs more guidance than his son. "Girls are different. With girls you have to listen to what they say. 90 per cent of my parenting time is with Willow," he told UK TV show Lorraine. "She has cats and I accidentally left the window open and she couldn't find her cats. She comes up to me and says, 'Daddy, did you leave the window open in the library?' and I said, 'Yes sweetie, I'm sorry.' And she said, 'I cannot believe you'd be so irresponsible!' I was crushed, I was devastated. I was like, 'We'll find your cats baby!' I was on the phone, 'I need people to? call the president, get some helicopters to find Willow's cats!'" The pets were eventually found safe and well, much to Will's delight. There have been rumours that US President Barack Obama wants Will to play him should a movie ever be created about his life. Will jokingly says the reason for that is they both have silky smooth ears. "Yeah. It's just about the ears, we both got the ears," he said, inviting the interviewer to stroke them. "It's like voodoo! I just put voodoo on you with my ears. You'll be waking up [shouting], 'Will Smith!' in the middle of the night." http://www.belfastte...b-16160060.html
