It's been 25 years since Quincy Jones helped gather the biggest names in music to record "We Are the World," but the song is as relevant today as it was then. Jones confirmed to me today that he's helping spearhead a new recording of the charity song, with the proceeds going to help Haiti. The new version will be recorded on Monday in Los Angeles. "It's the 25th anniversary and it's perfect timing," Jones said at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, where he was celebrating the launch of his new watch collection for Audemars Piguet. "It's not an accident, man. That's God. It will be 'We Are the World' for Haiti." Jones declined to name which singers have committed themselves, but I can tell you... The lineup may already include Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Will Smith, Jason Mraz, Sugarland, Sheryl Crow, Mya and teen sensation Justin Bieber, among others. "I want to get a final list before I put it out." Jones said. Director Paul Haggis will likely film Monday's recording session, a source confirms. The original song, which benefited African famine relief, was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and coproduced by Jones and Michael Omartian. It featured Jackson, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Bob Dylan and Ray Charles. This isn't Jones' first undertaking to help the disaster-stricken Caribbean nation. "I have two friends who are donating two $500,000 power generators," he said. "Another friend…is going to rebuild the [presidential] palace. All his money, his crew and his design so they don't even have to think about it." Jones' partnership with Audemars Piguet also includes a $1 million donation from the watch company to the Quincy Jones Foundation. Meanwhile, Jones said he is not involved with the Grammy tribute to Michael Jackson, but revealed that he will be opening up about the late King of Pop for an upcoming special on CNN. http://uk.eonline.com/uberblog/marc_malkin/b164438_stars_banding_together_record_new_we.html

Jada Pinkett Smith has revealed that her husband Will Smith is seriously considering swapping his acting career for politics and is even considering one day running for President of the United States. "Will is thinking about going into politics," she said. "He once said he could imagine becoming a US president. He wasn't joking, he was quite serious about it. Will and I want to leave traces on this planet - and with that I mean more important traces than just films." When Will finally decides to run for President, he may have some competition. Angelina Jolie has also previously expressed interest in running for the position, claiming that she could make a big difference. http://www.worstpreviews.com/headline.php?id=16575&count=0

First Official Captain America Casting News It's not so much as WHO has been cast, but who will NOT be. . . Yep, you guessed it. The speculation is over. The long standing rumor has been laid to rest. A source with Marvel Studios has just told me that Will Smith will not be portraying Captain America. The information linking Will Smith to the role of Captain America is completely inaccurate. A big thanks goes out to the guys at IMDb. If it wasn't for you, we wouldn't have been able to officially debunk this info. http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/Poniverse/news/?a=14235

Avatar Breaks Titanic's Worldwide Box Office Record Becoming the #1 Grossing Film of All-Time! January 26th, 2010 It only took six weeks for James Cameron's new film to top his previous film's worldwide record. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Avatar has become the top-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office passing Titanic's monumental worldwide gross. Avatar currently stands at $551.7 million at the domestic box office and $1.292 billion international box office, giving it a total of $1.843 billion, which passes the $1.84 billion that Titanic earned 13 years ago. Fox confirmed that the mark fell sometime early on Monday. Avatar is still approximately $49 million away from Titanic's domestic box office record of $600.8 million. The Hollywood Reporter reports the latest No. 1 weekend overseas tally was $108.3 million grossed from 11,925 screens in 111 markets. It was the sixth consecutive weekend that Avatar grossed more than $100 million on the foreign circuit. Avatar is directed by James Cameron and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang and Matt Gerald. http://www.movieweb.com/news/NELoqPLOscsDPP ----- In Cameron's own words: "He's the King of the World....again!"

'Avatar' passes 'Dark Knight' at box office Fox claims three of the frame's top 10 slots By ANDREW STEWART Topping the frame with an estimated weekend gross of $36 million for a cume of $552.8 million, 20th Century Fox and James Cameron's "Avatar" well surpassed Warner Bros.' "The Dark Knight" with $533.3 million to become the second highest grossing film ever at the domestic box office. Still behind "Titanic" in U.S. totals, "Avatar" made history overseas. Pic earned $107 million from 11,803 screens in 111 markets at the foreign B.O., just enough to sink the ship, making "Avatar" the all-time champ in international receipts with $1.28 billion. Cameron's "Titanic" previously held the record with $1.24 billion. "Having been a part of the 'Titanic' phenomenon, we never thought this day would come in our careers," said Fox Intl. co-prexys Paul Hanneman and Tomas Jegeus. "But James Cameron created in 'Avatar' a film with such humanity and magic that it resonates with people of every culture." Domestically, "Avatar" slipped a mere 16% in its sixth frame, earning $9.1 million on Friday, $16.5 million on Saturday, down just 5% from the same day last weekend, and an estimated $10.4 million on Sunday. Along with "Avatar," Fox claimed three of the frame's top 10 slots with "Tooth Fairy" opening to $14.5 million at 3,344 locations and "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" bringing in $6.5 million at 2,973 in its fifth frame. Sony's post-apocalyptic offering "Legion" performed well in its opening frame with $18.2 million at 2,476 locations, while CBS Film's inaugural pic "Extraordinary Measures" opened to a disappointing $7 million at 2,549. http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118014209.html?categoryid=13&cs=1&ref=bd_film

A Pokémon fan has earned a place in the record books with a memorabilia collection of more than 12,000 items related to the Nintendo franchise. Published: 7:30AM GMT 21 Jan 2010 Lisa Courtney is listed as having the biggest Pokémon collection in the world – 12,113 items – in the new edition of the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition, published today. The 21-year-old, from Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, has spent 13 years building up the collection which she said has swelled to more than 13,400 since it was counted by Guinness record-checkers last year and fills most of the house she shares with mother Sharon. ''To be in the new Gamer's Edition and to hold a world record for something you feel so passionate about is just an indescribable feeling,'' she said. ''My family have been incredibly supportive considering the collection takes up the whole house, including my mother's room! ''I've even named the room where my main collection resides Pokemon Centre Europe.'' Miss Courtney began her love affair with Pokémon when she saw a picture of Pikachu in a Nintendo magazine and started collecting even though she had no idea what the characters were. ''My favourite is a plush toy of the character Absol,'' she said. ''I fell in love with it.'' She said she will never get bored of collecting: ''There's always something new coming out in Japan. There's so much out there.'' Miss Courtney has been to Japan five times and plans to go back this year for another ''spending spree''. She is learning Japanese and hopes to one day become a Japanese teacher. Guinness World Records 2010 Gamer's Edition is the third instalment of the series. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/video-games/7037681/Pokemon-fan-earns-world-record-with-12000-item-memorabilia-collection.html ----- And I thought I was a freak.. :boxedin:

Will Smith joins "Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief"

I've seen the whole show too but I haven't seen Will. -
As some of us grew up with her, we can’t help but remember her as Ashley Banks on the “Fresh Prince of Bel Air”. But Tatyana Ali has grown up, and is a strong, educated, multi-talented actress and recording artist. Though having been in the industry from age four Tatyana is not your average child celebrity. She didn’t fall into the cliché Hollywood trap of drunken all night parties and scandals. “My parents would not have any of that!” Instead she took some time off and attended Harvard University to fulfill her love for education. Written by Kate sZatmari Since then she has played many different roles and has also began producing with her sister Anastasia. “Buppies”, the latest web series on BET is just one of her several projects. She also co-produced “Love That Girl” created by Bentley Kyle Evans (“Martin”, “The Jamie Foxx Show”) that will be airing on T.V1 on January 19th. “It’s an extremely funny sitcom about a woman who got married too young, has gotten divorced and is in the midst of trying to figure out who she really is.” Tatyana is also in the recording studio putting the finishing touches on her latest album “The Light” due out in April. Produced by Johnny J (“All Eyez on Me”, “Me Against the World”), songs written by Tatyana, the album is a collection of R’n’B with a touch of old school hip-hop. “I was very influenced by Denise Williams, Mary J. Blige and Gladys Knight. I wanted to create music that had meaning and inspired people.” She has come a long way from our favorite after school T.V show and is not showing any signs of slowly down soon. “It’s amazing, you work so hard for so long and all of a sudden everything comes to you at the same time. It’s very exciting!” New Sitcom Coming From Martin Lawrence Titled Love That Girl! You can also watch a clip here! http://www.mamimagazine.com/wordpress/?p=6262

Interview with Alfonso Ribeiro Q; How long have you been golfing? A: I got to do that math. For 20 years. Q: So you started when you were 2? A: Well thank you very much. I appreciate the love. Black don’t crack. Q: Now I saw you did a reality show not too long ago, and you said if you won it, you would do the Carlton dance from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Will you do the same if you win the amateur title here at the Hope? A; You know what, I’ll say that. I’ll do the Carlton dance if I win it. I think the win is pretty safe in me not winning it. We’ll see. Q; You never know, maybe people will see this and they’ll lay down just so you’ll dance. A; That’s happened before, people just be laying down for me. That can be taken the wrong way. Q: Very early in your career, you worked with Michael Jackson in the Pepsi commercials. Can you talk about that experience? A; It was great. Michael was the greatest entertainer in the history of music and in show business. It was truly a pleasure to work with him as a 12-year-old kid. I idolized him and it was pretty special. Q; I remember you had Michael’s moves down. A: Yeah, I could do a little bit of something, something with Michael. Q; Is it weird people remember you more for the Carlton dance than those other moves because you were an accomplished dancer? A; With the Carlton dance and the Fresh Prince, we were fortunate enough to have a very popular show, and people certainly enjoyed doing that. Even though I started as a real dancer, doing the funny dances is what I’m remembered for. It’s all good. If people know you, it’s a good thing. Q: Your co-star Will Smith was in a golf movie, “The Legend of Bagger Vance.” Have you golfed with him? A: Absolutely. I got him into golfing. He loves the game and we play as much as we can. He’s a little busy though. Q: Now maybe people will know you as a director. I saw you directed a Tyler Perry movie? A: Not a movie. It was “Meet The Browns,” which is his TV show. I directed that for him. I actually directed a Fresh Prince and a bunch of other shows, which is what I’ve been doing for the last several years, which has been cool. I enjoy that. Q; Mostly TV then? A; Yeah, I’m working my way up to TV. Q: Maybe someday you’ll be calling the shots on a Will Smith movie. A: You never know. We got time. Q: How is your golf game? It looks like you were hitting it pretty good. A; It’s not bad. You never know what’s going to happen here out here. When you’re playing with all the people here, it’s a little different. I have to play to a 2 handicap, so we’ll see what happens. Hopefully I can help my team out with a few birdies. http://www.mydesert.com/article/20100121/SPORTS05/301210005/1026/news12

Thanks for sharing that with us, Viz. It's really horrible the images from Haiti we see everyday on the news, so being there must be much worse. All my respect and admiration for the people who are helping, especially the medical staff. -

'The Karate Kid' redo: testing through the roof Generation Xers may have bemoaned the redo of their 1984 childhood favorite The Karate Kid (I know I did) with none other than silver spooner Jaden Smith taking on the Ralph Macchio role. But, perhaps the results from Sony’s early test screening of the movie from director Harold Zwart (The Pink Panther) will win converts to rejiggering Mr. Miyagi’s karate-lessons-hidden-in-manual labor. (Jackie Chan takes on the Wax on, Wax off mentor role.) The studio tells EW that the film scored just below Sony’s highest research screening ever, 2005’s Hitch, which ironically starred Jaden Smith’s dad Will, the last reigning movie star. With positive scores in the 97th percentile, the movie, which doesn’t open until June 11, might be one of those films that outdoes everyone’s expectations. Not that it’s likely to match Hitch’s gross, but that film did earn close to $370 million worldwide. The movie’s biggest challenge now will be going up with another ’80s classic: The A-Team, starring Bradley Cooper and Liam Neeson, which makes June 11 one fat nostalgia fest. http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2010/01/15/the-karate-kid-redo-testing-through-the-roof/

Dexter actor Michael C. Hall revealed Wednesday he has been battling cancer, but said he’s almost finished with treatment and the disease is in remission. Hall, 38, said in a statement he is lucky to have been diagnosed with the “treatable and curable condition” – Hodgkin’s lymphoma – and thanked his Los Angeles-area medical team for their skill in caring for him. His spokesman, Craig Bankey, said Hall’s cancer is in remission but the actor will continue scheduled treatments. Hall plans to go with his wife – and Dexter costar – Jennifer Carpenter to Sunday’s Golden Globes, where he's nominated for best dramatic actor and the show as best drama. He also plans to attend the Screen Actors Guild Awards the following Saturday, where Hall and the cast are also nominated. http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20336663,00.html ----- Damn! I'm a big fan of Michael. Good to see his cancer is in remission. Wish him all the best.
