For Lost and Found, album sales isn't really about the money. It's about a quality album reaching its full reasonable potential.

It's not that serious ya'll. The statement was obviously a joke... The man changed his name, lets be fair... It's not that serious....

No problem with gold. It is an achievement... But at the same time it kinda doesn't surprise me that Lost and Found reached gold... I expected it to reach gold at an earlier point and 600k at an earlier point. Will did receive resistance prior to Lost and Found, but Lost and Found recieved quite a bit of critical acclaim in the legitimate hip hop circles upon its release... Sigh... where's the Party Starter video... :ithinkimkanye:

^^ For me, these sad days are over. I just heard Party Starter on the radio!!! I was listening to my LL Cool J cd, and it ended so I took it out and turned the radio on, and it's in the middle of Party Starter!! So I started going crazy with excitement and turned it up full blast and danced all over the room! :lolsign: They didn't say much after the song, they said "That's Will Smith, he's a party starter!" This is going to be HUGE!! :yeah: ← Lol, glad you heard it... More likely than not, that's gonna be my reaction... The bad thing is that I'll probably hear it at work... but I have no problem running into someone else's office and standing there just to hear it... Yeah, I'm at that point ya'll...

:word: Me too. B2R could've done well if it was promoted well. There are some good songs on that. I liked Wild Wild West too. I think this movie will turn out ok, no need to be negative until we see what happens. ← It would have done better... But it wouldn't have made it a better album... But I agree that Will knows what he was doing with this, and I'm sure that he has surrounded himself with people who would give him good advice... I have no worries.

Ted, if you went to Amazon.com, you'd find good reviews for The Massacre and Who Is Mike Jones... I honestly think you're just searching for excuses to praise mediocrity. What Lost and Found has sold now is mediocre compared to what it could have and should have reasonably sold by now. We can slice it and dice it however we want, but that point is the common denominator... We can provide many theories for why Lost and Found should be right where it is now, but none of them stand up under scrutiny. All of this is likely no fault of Will's, but the fact remains that at this point, Lost and Found had the potential to sell better than it has. It hasn't lived up to it's potential. Though I'm happy it didn't flop like Born 2 Reign, I won't use Born 2 Reign as its meausuring stick... It deserves more than that.

I think that's the problem. We're comparing Lost and Found to a far inferior album just because it was it was his last album. As a result, anything Lost and Found does will be an accomplishment because the standard is Born 2 Reign. We're setting the bar too low. I understand your reservations about comparing it to Big Willie Style, but no one is making that comparison, certainly not me. Instead, why don't we draw comparisons to Willenium's sales... or an average between the sales of Willenium and B2R if you want to be even more accurate. Why don't we set the bar at a reasonable level. Born 2 Reign isn't a reasonable level. It was an anomaly. We do Lost and Found a disservice in setting the bar at such average levels... Lost and Found a great deal more than average... I also think people are looking at the drop in album sales as a natural progression... It certainly doesn't have to be... Lost and Found has proven that so far. Largely, the reason Born 2 Reign didn't do well was because it wasn't that good. Lost and Found... being very good, is doing better. If Will's next album is even better than Lost and Found and more widely accepted than Lost and Found has been, I expect it to enjoy better sales. Also, the thing with a lot of music stars is that they do the same things over and over again. They address the same subjects and they don't reinvent themselves. As a result, their music becomes banal very quickly... We've heard the backstreet boys croon the same themes so often, the novelty of it is lost. All musicians will progressively notice a drop in their sales from album to album because the masses love a new act... a new comer... But I think an artist like will can stymie that decline by doing what he did with Lost and Found... Talk about totally new subjects... things that don't fit the "Will Smith" mold. It keeps the artist more interesting... Artists tend to want to do the same kinds of songs that have earned them success in the past... things that have been proven in the industry... But the flip side of that is that there is only so long until when they do becomes boring and people lose interest in them.... That's doesn't have to be Will... and we shouldn't expect that....

Yeah Julie, that's most likely what it is. Again, I don't see Will making any errors that would mess up this project when Overbrook's reputation is riding on it, especially after the success of Hitch. I would assume that he would want to follow one great success with another success. That would include casting, script and the rest. The fact that his son was chosen perhaps even shows that he's being even more careful about this movie and an accurate portrayal of Gardner and his son. Lol, I don't think that Will is gonna be washing Jaden in a sink...

If you had asked me this question in June, I would have been surprised that Will hasn't sold more by this point. I aslo don't understand why people keep drawing comparisons to Born 2 Reign when Lost and Found outsold Born 2 Reign in its third week... Born 2 Reign was an anomaly, but I feel that people use Born 2 Reign as a form of measure for how Lost and Found is doing...

No, it's not that bad... but at the same time... it's not that good...

The bottom line is that all of this is not going to matter if the movie is good. The critics will say what they want, they'll always find something to say, but if the film is quality as I expect it will be, there's only so much they can say. Remember, this is the father who doesn't let his kids up from the dinner table without saying all of their multiplication tables. I don't think he's going to let nepotism ruin his film.

Yeah, I'm not really surprised that the album got to 600k. I was expecting it to do better by this point. It is a great achievement, but it is also a big step up from Born 2 Reign that it isn't much of a surprise.

Why's that?

Well it's never too early... Just wanted to get an idea from you guys what you would like to see on Will's next album as we wait for Party Starter. Will's been talking about the actor vs. the rapper in him a lot lately... It would be hot if he had a track called... "The Rapper vs. The Actor." It's would be 2 small versions of himself on either side of his shoulders... Neither would be evil nor good, but one would have hip hop gear, and the other would have Will's stylish hollywood garb... Both would be rapping about the positives of their field... the rapper rapping about hip hop and the actor rapping about film. Both are trying to convince Will to forsake the other and come over fully to their side. Will's trying to make that decision and he's listening to both sides... The actor gets the first shot at will with the first verse, the rapper gets the second verse, and Will responds to both on them in the third verse... and a 4th verse... (yeah a long track) would close the whole debate with Will expressing why he does both. The rapper and the actor could even interrupt eachother in the middle of verses... I just think it would be an interesting way for Will to present the whole debate; rapping vs. acting. And of couse there would have to be a music video. Do you guys have any ideas for tracks?

Personally, this is one of my all-time favorites... top 10. The scratching at the beginning was the first thing to hook me. I used to walk to the bus stop for school and just play the beginning of the track the whole way. It got too the point that I burned a goove in that part of the CD... and it stopped working after awile. The part that really use to have me skipping back was when the beat kicked in during the scratching with what I used to call "The Bell." I'd sometimes play it just to hear the beak kick in... And then I got to the lyrics... From the very beginning Take your place, allow me to felx a taste It was over... Almost every lyric, every word was and still is fire... I know ya'll still feel me Really don't act silly Thought I fell off just because I left Philly Took a break from the rap thing Went on hiatus Picked up the art of acting and multiplied paper... No, rapper has ever expressed the crossover from rapping to acting better than that. ----- Jealosy swinging on me made it's attack 'He's soft. He's wack, man that ain't real rap.' You believe that! It hurt me at first, but it's cool Took the insults Fed them to my ego, used it for fuel I think that's the main theme of the song right there. Without saying anything more... that's what makes the track one of my favorites... There's obviously a lot more to say, but what are your thoughts on the track?
