Not surprised in the least... single success doesn't necessarily translate into success for the album.

Production of Pursuit of Happyness is set to fully start in August. I believe that the latest rumors were that Will was to start shooting in August as well. Party Starter is supposed to come to television and radio in August, at least for those in the US, Australia perhaps... I believe that the Party Starter video will be out all over and there will be no restriction on it... How does that afford him more time to promote Party Starter? He will be shooting from August to October or November I believe... unless he is catering specifically to the UK, his delay of Party Starter's release until he starts filming doesn't seem to fit your theory Kev. Are you saying that Will is going to start promoting Party Starter in October or November?

Well I think the reason this album isn't doing as well now doesn't have as much to do with Will not getting respect as much as it is that promotion fell off sharply after April. He was everywhere talking about Lost and Found after its release, but after awhile, he was only performing Switch, no other songs from the album, and he wasn't mentioning Lost and Found much. People were definitely talking about how good the album was, so I think he got some level of respect. But there's only so much respect you will get from mainstream hiphop with Switch as your main and only single...

I always find it funny when people say things like "I'm just trying to eat... I'm just trying to feed my family..." when in the past, they've made or are even making upwards of a million dollars a project... (not a year... a project...) They're stuggling to clothe and feed their families? Anyway... back to the topic... This is like a presidential debate... all the spin and punditry.... Bottom line: the album isn't doing well largely because of the complete disregard for how the album was doing while Switch enjoyed success (don't act surprised, people have been saying this for a month and a half now on this forum) If Party Starter had been released in a timely fashion... use your imagination... This is a critical juncture for the album. I hope Party Starter can bring it back to prominence... but again, I'm not expecting much.

Cause Born 2 Reign wasn't that good anyway...

I'm not too surprised... geez... it's what happens when you only have ONE SINGLE out for 4-5 months. The numbers could have been an abnormality, and could probably rise next week, but you should never let your album drop below 15k before you release your second single...
-
Lol, too swamped at work to worry about it. I would still like it to come out sometime this year though... that would be nice. But hey, what can we do but wait. In the meantime, I have "Pon De Replay" to keep me somewhat "un-bored." That last statement sounds so sad....
-
Hopefully, we'll see....
-
Lol, we won't have to worry about that for about 5 months...
-
You mean the "success" of Lost and Found...? Granted...
-
Don't think anyone's really surprised.

Someone should definitely read it out for the podcast... Lol you have to love the internet. CIA operatives are being outed, wars and genocide are taking place, terrorists are reaking havoc, and we're arguing and swearing over Lost and Found. Only on the internet.
-
Lol, looking forward to the podcast Tim.

Tim, you make a good point. But that being said, what did that do for the album... It gave the album a bump for 2 weeks, and now for the past 4 weeks, possibly 5 when the final numbers come for this week, the album has fallen in sales and out of the top 50. My question is... If interscope is so keen as to notice when a single is doing well, even to the point that they would delay the subsequent single, why aren't they sharp enough to realize that the single isn't helping the album anymore. We've been listening to Switch since February... even though the song may have grown on people only lately, fresh content is definitely needed. While it is unprecedented and highly highly unlikely, if Switch, by some miracle, were to climb the charts again, would it then be reasonable for Interscope to delay the release of Party Starter as Lost and Found continues to fall.
-
I'd have to agree... But then that brings us back to the question, why has Switch been the only single for going on 5 months... Does anyone think that releasing Party Starter a month to a month and a half ago would have hurt the album or inhibited it's rise to platinum and multiplatinum. I contend that it would have helped the album. But I think this goes back to the point. I think we're taking for granted that it doesn't matter when a single is released, that same amount of people will buy it; the same people who would be interested and willing to buy Lost and Found in June when they heard Party Starter would have the same interest in August or September when they hear Party Starter. It doesn't work like that. A. Internet Piracy - The more time passes without a person buying an album, the more likely a person will be to download the album and not buy it. B. Competition - As more time passes and more albums come out, the more competition a given album has to deal with in capturing the attention of prospective buyers. C. Loss of Interest - This one is indeed shallow, but in general, the average music buyer prefers the new to the old. A person is just less likely to buy an album after a few months, especially if they haven't heard too much about it, regardless of how hot a single song is. Usually, at this point, someone would just get the single, not the album. D. Location, Location, Location - The better your album sells, the more visible your album is in stores and the easier it is to find, especially for people not necessarily looking for that album. As time increases and sales decrease, the harder it becomes to find an album. This is one of the biggest arguments for an artist keeping themselves in the limelight. The longer they keep their album sales up and their content fresh, the more visible it will be in retail stores eager to market that artist. E. Promotion and Time - Sales often vary proportionally with promotion. However, especially for Will, the more time passes, the more other projects come up and as a result, the less time an artist has to promote and focus their attention on the CD they released a few months back.

The Switch single had huge airplay, as well as the video. The video played 4 or so times per day on BET and I've heard Switch more times on the radio than I've heard a lot of other people fortunately.

I just believe that it's best not to set expectations at this point... if you guys remember, we talked about the album selling 4x when it leaked, now people are talking about 2x. Soon, people will be saying that album sales don't matter. When Switch was released, Will mentioned that it would be the anesthesia before the real thing. Suffice to say, we should be in surgery by now, and the anesthesia wore out in June. Even with the milking of Switch thing... I have to stress that a single from an album exists primarily for the purpose of promoting the album, not as a stand-alone piece of music. When it becomes apparent that the single no longer helps the album, it's time to introduce a new single. Singles aren't supposed to be milked just for their success, but rather, to lend success to the album as well. With a singles success comes increased interest in the album, but look at album sales and tell me if that was the case... You guys have to admit that 5 months is a very long time between singles regardless of how optimistic you are, especially as this is the second single. Even 4 months is pretty long. I don't think is pessimistic to say that interscope has dropped the ball on this, and I won't provide excuses for them. Come on guys, Will just did the Live 8 with millions of people watching, and his album sales went down. I think it's safe to say that the album hasn't done as well as it should have done by this point and that things have to change in order for things to pick up. Party Starter would be nice.
-
Anything is possible, but I'd rather not get my expectations too high. If we are to follow precedent, Tell Me Why won't be out until Christmas. Even I'm not trying to listen to Tell Me Why around Christmas. For Will to pull off multiplatinum, Interscope is going to have to step up the single releases. Party Starter now, Tell Me Why at the end of September/beginning of October. Hopefully, both singles will do well, and they should, bumping up album sales for a few months. This 5 month thing with Switch is just ridiculous, and there's no defense of it. Saying that Lost and Found has sold almost 600k just off of Switch is a bit misleading and intones that Switch is the main reason it has sold 600k. In truth, a lot of people bought or listened to Lost and Found because they were interested in Mr. Nice Guy, and subsequently heard the rest of the album and thought it was hot. Lost and Found is nearing 600k with only Switch out, but that will happen when an album is hot, but there's only been one single for 5 months. Think of what would have happened if the second single had been released in June as we had initially thought. Not only would Party Starter be a hit, which it will be when it is released anyway, but we'd likely have had 2 singles in the top 15, and the album would certainly still be in the top 50. I'd even go as far as saying top 30. Lets just hope that Lost and Found can ride Party Starter into platinum status and people rediscover Lost and Found, not just for the sake of the fans and Will, but for the sake of hip hop.

Yes it is. It's on purpose, I read somewhere that's how happiness is spelled at his son's daycare in the movie. ← Hmm that's interesting... ← Indeed

Willenium vs. Lost and Found vs. Big Willie Style
MaxFly replied to marz's topic in Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince
Lol, yeah, that got a wow from me too... But it's all good. -
The whole battle was sick, but Jeff's scatching for the LL is hard piece was crazy, especially with the stuttering... wow... Will needs to have a track open up like that. I can't tell you how many times I played that part of the battle.
