  1. http://www.sohh.com/2010/05/nas_reveals_secret_to_beat_selection_i_h.html Grammy-nominated rapper Nas has revealed how he selects beats and why some collaborations and tracks get scraped due to time restraints. According to Nas, his process begins by considering all the producers he would like to link with. "Well I have a wish list sometimes or I have a dream list of who I would love to work with and wish they would want to get in the studio and do records or whatever," Nas said in an interview. "Then I have my own ideas of being a producer. And what happens is a lot of time goes by with me being indecisive so it winds up with me kind of like doing what I have to do really fast because I played around for so long. Then, the deadlines come. But, you never know who has it, everyone's got a lot of talent. You have Little Brother, you have Drumma Boy. There's a lot of dudes I like right now. You have DJ Toomp." (BET) Last month, Nas talked about being a hip-hop veteran and watching rap newcomers. "Where do I see myself, I'm waiting for the rap game to catch up," Nas said during a press conference. "Not to sound arrogant, that's just a generational thing. When the young guys come out, they hit me on the BlackBerry, real rap and it's love because they can tell I love them. And it's just like, we're speaking from different perspectives so that's why they appreciate the older stuff and kinda like it, or the guys that's older than them because they can see where their future might be. But meanwhile, they're reinventing the game from the early stage from a young stage." (Rap Radar) Nas is currently putting together his new Damian Marley collaboration album, Distant Relatives. "Reggae and hip-hop are cousins,'' he said in an interview. "Go back before the '90s and think about the music that was playing on the ghetto blasters and you'll hear it...The whole world is like family, split up all over the place. It's overdue, and I want to help build whatever we can [in Africa]. I've worked with a lot of reggae artists, like Sizzla and Supercat, but not until [2005's] Jamrock did I get a chance to work with Damian. I love his music and I'm a big fan of Bob Marley and the whole family. We haven't worked out any tour dates yet. But I'm sure Damian and I will do something soon." (Miami Herald) Marley recently shared his reaction to Lil Wayne's contribution as a guest feature on the album. "It's funny, because the track is called 'My Generation,'" Damian explained in an interview. "It's definitely geared towards that. Wayne really showed a lot of respect in his verse, in the way that he handled it. He handled it exactly would've really loved him to. I don't have any criticism at all about what he did. I think it's a great and blessed track. That's all I can really say about that." (Hip Hop DX)

  6. http://www.sohh.com/2010/04/common_wants_to_know_whats_going_on_w_ma.html Actor/Rapper Common has revealed interest in portraying the late music pioneer Marvin Gaye in a biopic. With rumors of a film being in the works for years, Common said he would be willing to take on the lead role. "I've been sniffing around, trying to figure out who might be interested, who might be already planning one," Common says. "Marvin was a monumental figure in music, important in our lives in so many ways. And troubled. He's a character with so much depth. I'd be all-in on that project." (Orlando Sentinel) Blockbuster movie star Will Smith recently passed on an opportunity to portray Gaye. Smith has turned down the lead role in moviemaker Cameron Crowe's new Marvin Gaye biopic. The actor spent months in negotiations to portray the legendary soul man, and now Crowe, who has been trying to get the project off the ground for four years, is without a leading man again. But the Almost Famous director isn't rushing to find his Gaye - he's determined to hire the right man for the role. (Star Pulse) Past plans were put out that a Gaye feature would be done by director Lauren Goodman. The final three years of Motown legend Marvin Gaye's life will be revisited in director Lauren Goodman's forthcoming biopic, "Sexual Healing." Production on the film, which will be shot in Hungary and Germany, is set to begin in three months, according to The Hollywood Reporter. (MTV) Outside of Hollywood, Common is currently putting together his new album, The Believer. "It's 'good' music," he said. "The themes are street music and elevation, things that I feel like I always embody when I rap. But here there's new situations, new solutions." As far as production goes, Common says he's working with No I.D. and Kanye West, both of which have produced a couple of his previous albums -- "Be" and "Finding Forever," "Resurrection" and "One Day It'll All Make Sense" respectively. "I'm striving to get it out in the fall," he said, adding that fans can expect a single by late summer or early fall. (Billboard)

  9. When he came out I thought he had potential to be one of the great rappers but I think his ego in recent years got the best of him and his quality of music has gotten weaker, now if he shuts up and makes better music it's a possibility

  14. I was recently thinking the same thing when I recently was listening to "All I Know" On Jazzy's "Return Of The Magnificent" CD, I just checked on Wikipedia and it says he's working on a new album, I don't have any other details right now though...
  15. Eminem "Not Afraid", FINALLY a good single, probably the best one since "Lose Yourself", if he does an album with songs like this then I might buy it http://www.hiphopdx..../audio/id.10794
  16. I dig Ghostface's last album, it's real soulful, I think I mentioned it on my list of albums that I liked the most in 2009, there's still some good music out there when you search for it....
  17. Jamie Foxx Feat. LL Cool J "All This Love", this is some brand new HEAT!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh1o670gt8g
  18. Yeah you compare Kanye to all the great rappers and he does come out average, in fact the best thing about his first couple albums were the guest appearances, and I think the only reason why he's had so much success is 'cause most mainstream rappers have been weak and he's been able to benefit off of that but I think with better rappers emerging as of late he's gonna have a harder time staying popular if he don't step his game up...
  19. This is nice to see Kanye realising that what he's been doing the past few years hasn't been that hot compared to what he did on his first couple albums: http://www.sohh.com/2010/04/dj_premier_swears_no_electro_music_on_ka.html Hip-Hop pioneer DJ Premier has promised that the upcoming Kanye West album, Good A** Job, will not feature any experimental or electro music. According to Premier, West has emphasized the importance of returning to his hip-hop roots. "I'm working with Kanye. He reached out to me like, 'Yo, you at the studio?,'" Premier said in an interview. "He came by at 8 p.m. and didn't leave until three in the morning. We were drinking Grey Goose and just bugging out. It was me, Kanye and Showbiz, from Showbiz & AG talking about the whole industry...He told me how he wanted this album to be really boom-bap, hard, hard beats. He said, 'No electro Preem, I swear no electro [Laughs].' Ye is still that crazy dude he's always been. He's really focused on making this album raw. So I gave him a banger and he said he wanted two more on top of that one. I'm giving him two more this week." (VIBE) Premier recently hinted at the project being more raw than past efforts. "Well, first of all, if you look at all of Kanye West's output, he actually did a lot to bring back sampling and make it cool again, even though he's more of a mainstream artist" Premier explained. "But his new album is strictly hard beats and rhyme. He's totally done with electro. You're gonna be surprised what you hear." (Amajanese) Fellow hip-hop pioneer Pete Rock recently confirmed being in the studio with Ye. "I mean, I'm working with him," Rock told radio host Peter Rosenberg. "That's all I can say is that I'm working with him. I went out [to Hawaii.] It's beautiful man, like, he just feels like a little brother to me. You know what I'm saying? Like, my little brother that's doing it. And we got along just fine. He's definitely hip-hop, his roots, I was testing him on joints...He takes it to another level which is dope. He had these musicians and this song, they played around my little raggedy beat and made it real [big]. I love the way he works -- he goes from one room, writing rhymes then goes to another beat and goes to another room and does something else -- I love what he's done, I always thought he was clever. I used to bug out over the ego thing but once you get to know him, it's like 'Oh, okay, he's a sweetheart.' [laughs] We got along just well." (Noisemakers) Rap veteran Q-Tip also revealed his involvement on West's album. "I just try to work with people who I admire or whom I think has got it," he revealed in an interview. "So right now I'm working on Nas' sh*t, about to work with Kanye on his sh*t. Just trying to keep up my momentum. I'm about to work with Talib [Kweli] on his project. I been trying to work with [Jay-Z] for a while so hopefully he'll realize the heat I got and come with it [laughs]." (Brooklyn Bodega) Good A** Job is speculated to drop June 2010
