question about the "album sales this week thread"
bigted replied to sonic1988's topic in Caught in the Middle
I was talking about recent history, there might've been somebody that went platinum or double platinum off of one single, but in no way in hell you could go 11 times platinum on one single, that ain't possible, maybe "Thriller" might've sold that much with just "Thriller", then went on to sell 30 million when more singles were released, I think Vanilla Ice probably released a few singles off that album. -

Pete Rock and CL Smooth "Lots Of Lovin'", this song never gets old! :kool:

Like y'all say FP's not a one-dimensional mc, he could make great songs about any topic it seems, whether it's serious or fun, and that's what seperates him from other mcs, that's why ol' school and new school mcs respect him and he also reaches people who normally don't listen to hip-hop, only great mcs could do that, his music has that universal appeal, he brings something for everyone to enjoy, not many do that as effective as he does, as long as he keeps doing his thing, I'll be happy with that.

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/news/05-07/01.shtml#run Run-D.M.C. Reissues Due in September David Nadelle reports: The music industry have been overly kind to many artists by re-releasing/packaging albums that arguably should have languished eternally in rest-stop cassette bargain bins. Everyone should rejoice when a "lost classic" gets unearthed and released, or when a essential album reissue adds a bunch of mixes, demos and unreleased gems, or when the Fall's entire Peel Session output gets a 6xCD box treatment (well, maybe only hardcore Fall fans will triumph that one). However, it's tough to stomach the unnecessary and ridiculous. Is it only time before consumers will be able to snap up the "platinum edition" of "Songs Inspired by the Dream Sequences from 'Sweet Valley High'" or the entire remastered Frozen Ghost catalogue, with bonus radio edits, A&R exec commentary, a fold-out board game, collectable hologram pogs, a sports bra, and housed in a deluxe box featuring a "real cascading waterfall" (it could happen!)? Bah, who needs it? Finally, and appropriate for such a far-reaching and barrier breaking band, parts of Run-D.M.C.'s brash back catalogue will start to get the once-over it deserves. Billboard reports that the corporate triptych of Arista, Profile, and Legacy will be issuing expanded CD versions of King of Rock, Raising Hell and Tougher Than Leather on September 5. All new versions will feature rare and unreleased tracks. Additionally, praise and plaudits will be provided by Public Enemy's Chuck D, who has penned the liner notes which, incidentally, can already be viewed on PE's official website. As far as extras go, the refurbished CD of King of Rock (1985) will include the original version of the Beastie Boys-covered "Slow and Low", an unreleased long version of "Jam-Master Jammin'", the B-side "Together Forever", and a Live Aid version of "King of Rock". 1986's mainstream breakthrough Raising Hell adds an a cappella version of "My Adidas", the original "Walk This Way" demo, "Lord of Lyrics", and two radio spots, a "Raising Hell" tour promo and a commercial for "Live at the Apollo". Lastly, Tougher Than Leather (1988) will be enhanced with some goodies on it's CD as well, including an instrumental version of "Beats to the Rhyme", a demo of "How'd Ya Do it Dee", the unreleased track "Crack", the hometown yule tidings of "Christmas in Hollis", and an April 1987 commercial for Penthouse magazine. And finally, reality TV hounds and fanatics alike will be thrilled to know that the D.M.C.'s Reverend Run is making his way to MTV quite soon with his show "Run's House". You be illin'? * Run-D.M.C. What you said is right, but do you think that majority of the people would give a damn about the messages even if the singles got released? I'm sure it would be forgotten once some other artist brings out a raunchy video with high sexual content. That's how sad the music industry is today. ← :word: That's true unfortunately, Nas' single "Just Another Moment" with Quan fell off the charts really fast, it's not a guarantee that they would be big hits like everyone says they are gonna be, even Kanye's single ain't doing well, only dumbed down singles sell now on the most part, the people that buy "Lost and Found" will appreciate the work longer than those who buy the disposable music that'll be forgotten fast.

Breaking News: Album drops out of top 50
bigted replied to Frenetic's topic in Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince
Well if he sells around 700,000 with just "Switch", that's more than what LL and Nas sold and probably what Common will have with multiple hit singles off their albums , and that's impressive, not as impressive as going multi-platinum, but impressive enough, but as long as there's a JJFP tour and he does more albums then I'll be content with this. -
If "Parter Starter" doesn't come out soon, Interscope'll be dropping the ball on the opportunity to go at least platinum and most importantly the masses won't be able to hear the great messages of "Party Starter" and "Tell Me Why", which would be even more dissapointing 'cause this album needs to get the recognition that a classic album should get, if it was gonna be like this, Will might as well stayed on Columbia, I have confidance it'll come out soon though, now if it doesn't come out by September, then things might not look good.

I heard they're supposed to be performing in Philly sometime this week with KRS-ONE, Melle Mel, and Rob Base, hosted by Monie Love and MC Lyte, it's supposed to be a hip-hop legends show, somebody posted something about this in another hip-hop forum about checking ticketmaster in if interested, that's a heads up for anyone that lives on the east coast, if I had the time and money I'd go!
-
Well r&b and hip-hop artists collab so much and the music sounds similiar so I wouldn't say it's that much of a difference to compare some r&b artists to hip-hop artists sometimes, it's not that far off as comparing country to rap.
-
Hell yeah, I love Naughty By Nature, they're one of the greatest groups of all time, they are iicons from 'Jersey that deserve more due, I think their last album "iicons" is one of the best albums of this decade so far, it's a shame they only released one single from that one 'cause it deserved to go platinum, it had so many great songs on it, "Swing Swang" would've been a bigger club banger that summer than that song with 3LW which was a good song still, I think "Family Tree" should've also been released, that's one of the deepest songs I ever heard.
-
LL Cool J "Can't Think" "The whole world evolves around sex and cash The black man's motto, kiss my ass!", powerful message there
-
I think if you go on any board you'd get that answer it's not biased, Mase is nowhere near Will's level, he's one of the wackest rappers of all-time, he has as many good songs as Will does classic albums, Will's a legend in hip-hop, not Mase, I never heard in my life anyone say that Mase is a legend.

You make some good points there fuq, people are always gonna be offended by what people do or say no matter what else you do, people constantly criticize R. Kelly and Michael Jackson too for their few faults and ignore their many accomplishments in the music industry, there were many good moments about the BET awards too but people shine their light on the negativity, Chuck D's one of the smartest people in hip-hop and is a good role model for the youth but he ain't perfect either and not everybody likes him, people could be offended from him cursing in his raps sometimes just like they would be offended for Will and Jada cursing on BET but I'd rather have a 10-year old listen to Public Enemy than I would have them listen to Ja Rule, nobody's perfect though BET did screw up though if you think about it, how would you feel about having your younger cousin or brother or sister watching women giving lapdances and Will and Jada cursing in the commercial but they also screw up by playing mostly videos with no subject matter to them about pimps and hoes and they don't play Public Enemy or KRS-ONE videos and maybe once a month you'll see them play Will's videos, BET needs better content if it's aimed for kids but so does a lot of other channels, even Will addressed that on "I Wish I Made That" that people don't consider him black 'cause he ain't rapping about shooting and robbing banks, I mean I'm old enough to know that it's all fun and entertainment but sometimes kids could take things literally.
-
If people feel offended by that they shouldn't watch BET and shouldn't let their kids watch BET if they have strong beliefs against swearing, nobody forces them to watch it if they don't want to, it was just a skit though, but even Chuck D said something in his latest terrordome about how the BET awards shouldn't have had Destiny's Child giving lapdances 'cause it's supposed to be a family show, but there's worse things in music videos than anything at that show and Destiny's Child makes positive music so it's hard to see Mistachuck's logic there 'cause even some people get offended by Public Enemy's music, I mean it wasn't like a gangsta rap video, maybe it's 'cause some black people get mad though that they're being potrayed in a negative aspect, there should be a petition against them gangsta rappers more than the BET network. btw, here's what Chuck D said about the BET Awards: "Now, Magic Johnson getting a lap dance? What does this mean? Must've been a cruel ass joke or something, eh? Again I've said the second B.E.T got white corporate ownership, out the window went any accountability and responsibility to the black community. B.E.T was cross body blocked at the head and knees by VIACOM in 2000 by taking off Tavis Smiley and Teen Summit almost simultaneously. Uncle Bob Johnson who sold it in lieu of an NBA Basketball franchise in Charlotte gets a Beyonce styled booty lap dance on national TV with her father in the front row, excuse me while I cough up blood here. Damn, does ratings and money mean we lower standards below the tacky line. Makes me sound cantankerous, but I'm telling you this is making that capitol scene in Birth Of A Nation fit in perfect to what I saw. A bunch of hypocritical triple talkers I'd say. A teen idol named Omarion is on the show, why? To make you understood that there's a younger demographic. Then where does the strip club act fit in and to who? And is it appropriate for the CEO to show he's down too...? ...sheeeee White folks who now have this mutated existence window itself through the tube probably consider this a march of money making monkeys. We can no longer say we don't care about what people think. These whippings of ass distraction have a place, but again in very dark adult circles. Man, as I say it doesn't do me good baseball bat bashing B.E.T. But you have little choice but to hate on something that just don't love you."
-
You get the feeling that Will did those "Freakin' It" and "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" type songs to compete with the other rappers on the charts at the time since it was the bling-bling era, he shouldn't worry about competing with 50 Cent and them chart rappers, he should do more tracks that're on his mind and if he does any fun tracks it should be like "Girls Ain't Nothin' But Trouble" type song where he's poking fun on a dillema and that'd get him the most respect among his peers.

Hi-Tek's a great producer and he brought out the best of Talib Kweli on "Train Of Thought", that's one of the best albums ever made in hip-hop, I'm looking forward to seeing them work together again! :dj:
-
Err... I don't think so. No matter how much you don't agree with the opinions that Kanye will not become a legend or not, that is just a silly statement to make. Kanye is by far a better producer than Alicia. How many people are queing up to get an Alicia Keys beat over a Kanye beat?? :hmm: ← You don't like Alicia Keys? Alicia's work right now is genious I'd say! A lot of people like Alicia's work too, I think she has some Grammies too, so you could say that she's at least on the same level as him, it's not like I said somebody you never heard of is better than Kanye, it's sorta unfair to compare them though since Alicia does more r&b producing and Kanye does hip-hop producing, speaking of producers, what other of today's producers in hip-hop could be future legends? I'd say that Pharrell's doing a lot of great things right now in hip-hop and could be one, Swizz Beats is great too but I don't like much of his recent work, "I'm A Hustla" is average compared to "Ruff Ryders Anthem", and Hi-Tek's a slept on producer, I'm looking forward to him doing another album with Talib Kweli again.

Heavy D and The Boyz "We Got Our Own Thing"

De La Soul feat. Flava Flav "Come On Down"

Will should definately collab more, especially ol' school legends and not too much of today's rappers, I wanna see JJFP do an album with Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh next year, they could call it "So Fresh 2006" where they do a lot of throwback type songs with cameos by Rev. Run, DMC, Biz Markie, LL Cool J, and De La Soul, it'd be the greatest album ever made, I think that'd bring a lot of ol' school heads back again who thought hip-hop was dead.
-
Well dumbing down is actually what sells now, Jay-Z wouldn't sell much if he didn't dumb down either on his singles, 50 Cent and Eminem selling a lot but their whole style is dumbed down arguably some might say, even Kanye released "Workout Plan" which was a dumbed down video, Public Enemy probably won't sell much at all on their new album 'cause people don't wanna hear serious rap that much anymore, I don't want Will to do a whole serious album 'cause that's not his style, that'd be like 2Pac doing a party album.

KRS-ONE "Conscious Rapper"

I ain't no BEP fan but I gotta give them credit for making songs with better content than most of these wanksta rap groups today who make songs about "wait until u see my d***?" and by having James Brown, Q-Tip, and Talib Kweli on their albums, they introduce them more to the masses just like Kanye does and they're humble, Kanye is too damn conceited, he should let his music do the talking for him, not everyone'll feel him if he acts like that, but I also give Kanye cred too even though I ain't a fan, and yes Jay-Z' a legend 'cause he has a lil' longevity, only time'll tell if he's still making hits like LL probably will when he's 60, but I ain't a fan of him either, I try to be as open minded as possible and to say BEP is wack just 'cause you don't like to listen to them isn't open minded either, we all have different tastes, just chill man.
