  5. Nick Cannon Goes 'Wild' With Kanye, Ying Yang Twins, Common 07.07.2005 8:34 PM EDT New sketch-comedy show will also feature Method Man, Christina Milian. HOLLYWOOD — Nick Cannon is no stranger to comedy. The aspiring funnyman first honed his stand-up skills at the age of 12 and four years later he was already landing gigs at famous venues like the Comedy Store, the Improv and the Laugh Factory. Now the 24-year-old is revisiting his roots with his new sketch-comedy program, "Wild 'N Out," debuting July 28 on MTV. The show's roster is an eclectic blend of rap, hip-hop and comedy performers. "It's amazing. I just got all my comedic friends together, introduced them to my hip-hop friends, and we just created this big, huge improv sketch-comedy show that's unlike anything you've ever seen on television," Cannon told MTV News backstage at the BET Awards. "Common came through. Kanye West, the Ying Yang Twins, Method Man, Christina Milian. Comics like Kat Williams and Wayne Brady. It's just like a party in every episode." Ever the industry chameleon, the multi-tasking Cannon also has five films in the works (see "Nick Cannon Flexing His Mogul Muscle In Hollywood"), plus his sophomore LP, Stages, which drops this fall. The video for the album's first single, "Can I Live" featuring Anthony Hamilton, which Cannon directed, recently debuted at #1 on BET. Longtime friend Kanye also worked on the new record, which will include a track featuring Talib Kweli. "The record I did with Talib was real soulful stuff," Cannon said. "I was just trying to express myself more than anything and really get out what was inside of me. On my last album, I worked with R. Kelly and P. Diddy, and that was amazing, but I didn't feel like I really put myself out there. On this I feel like I and showed what I could do as a producer, as an artist and as a musician." As for the slew of films in his arsenal, the actor is most looking forward to "The Underclassman," a Miramax project he stars in, wrote and produced. Out August 5, the film features Cannon as a baby-faced detective struggling to gain respect from his peers. When he is sent to investigate the murder of a posh private school student, he stumbles upon an underground auto-theft ring. "It's like the new 'Beverly Hills Cop.' It's my baby," the actor said. "It really is like watching your kid go to school on the first day. You just hope for the best. But however it does at the box office, it doesn't matter. I'm proud of it, and how often can somebody say that a kid who's under 25 actually wrote, produced and starred in his own film? So that's an accomplishment in itself." Next up, Cannon can be seen alongside Bow Wow in the '70s-inspired roller-skating flick, "Roll Bounce," dropping September 23. Currently, he's filming the political thriller "The Beltway," for which he's also executive producer. Finally, the actor will play the brother to Forest Whitaker in the indie gambling drama "Even Money" (formerly titled "Jump Shot"), featuring Hollywood heavyweights Ray Liotta, Kelsey Grammer, Kim Basinger and Danny DeVito. The film, which incorporates multiple story lines à la "Crash" and "Traffic," is slated to hit theatres later this year.
  6. MTV Will Air 10 Hours of Live 8 Reruns By DAVID BAUDER AP Television Writer NEW YORK - In the television equivalent of a do-over, the MTV Networks said they would air 10 commercial-free hours of performances Saturday from last weekend's Live 8 concerts. Viewers will be able to see the entire sets of U2, Coldplay, Pink Floyd, Kanye West and Green Day on either MTV or VH1, and sometimes both, Van Toffler, president of the MTV Networks Music Group, said Friday. MTV took a critical whipping and received complaints from more than 2,000 viewers about their eight hours of Live 8 coverage on July 2. Between commercials, interviews and reports from correspondents, MTV often showed only a song or two from several of the performances. Toffler said the list of performers at each concert, held in 10 different cities, kept growing in the days leading up to the show - partly because MTV was helping organizers book acts. "It just got bigger and bigger and we couldn't accommodate them all," he said. At the same time, MTV had made a commitment to organizers to explain the purpose behind the concerts, and many artists wanted to be interviewed about their reasons for being there, he said. MTV's telecast stood in contrast to America Online, which offered most of the performances in their entirety. Many of MTV's viewers weren't even alive when Pink Floyd broke up, so Toffler said he was surprised at how many wanted to see the band's reunion performance in full. As the complaints flooded in, Toffler said he contacted Live 8 organizers on Wednesday to see if some of the performances could be rerun. VH1 will air selected performances between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. EDT/PDT, featuring artists more popular with its older audience: Rob Thomas, Sting, the Dave Matthews Band and Maroon 5, for example. MTV will show performances between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., featuring Linkin Park & Jay Z, the Killers, Kanye West and Green Day. Both networks will air U2, Pink Floyd, Coldplay, Paul McCartney and Orchestra Baobab. The full list of performers became available Friday on the networks' Web sites. After the performances, MTV will air a 30-minute special, "Live 8: Next Steps," with news reports on the concerts and the G8 summit. ABC has probably seen all it wants of Live 8, however. Its two-hour concert special July 2 was seen by fewer than 3 million people, a smaller audience than even coverage of the rain delay of the Daytona 400 on NBC.
  7. Vandross' Funeral Soulful and Powerful By LARRY McSHANE Associated Press Writer NEW YORK - The funeral service for eight-time Grammy winner Luther Vandross hit just the right notes Friday: soulful, joyful and powerful, an echo of the late singer's unforgettable voice. Family, friends and fans filled The Riverside Church for a celebration of Vandross' too-short life, a memorial service that morphed into a revival meeting before ending with an all-star rendition of his hit single "Power of Love/Love Power." Vandross' wide appeal was evident in the first few rows of mourners, where current hit-makers Usher and Alicia Keys shared space with music legends Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle. "There are no sad faces here today," said longtime friend LaBelle, resplendent in a bright yellow dress with a diamond necklace and earrings. "It's not a mournful service. I'm celebrating because Luther would want us too." Vandross, 54, died July 1 at a New Jersey hospital, two years after he suffered a debilitating stroke. He sold more than 25 million records in his long career, with hits like "Stop For Love," "Here and Now" and "Dance With My Father." As Vandross' gold coffin sat at the foot of the altar, LaBelle read a poem written by the R&B icon's mother, Mary Ida, who was seated in the front row. Vandross' other family members, nine nieces and their 11 children, filled in the seats around the family matriarch to remember the man known to them as "Uncle Ronnie." The altar bore just a single, simple floral arrangement, with white lilies rising from a collection of white and yellow roses. Mourners lined up for two city blocks in a driving rain before the church opened. Once inside, they were brought to their feet and moved to cheers repeatedly as Vandross favorites Wonder, Franklin and Cissy Houston sang in tribute. Houston performed the gospel standard "Deep River," while Wonder left the crowd breathless with his version of the gospel song "I Won't Complain." But it was Franklin, brushing aside a slight sore throat, who sent choir and clergy dancing on the altar with her version of "Amazing Grace." Franklin began to ad-lib at song's end, addressing the Vandross family and congregation as the music swelled and the crowd clapped along. "There's healing in the name of Jesus!" she sang before returning to her seat, where Franklin raised her hands and waved along with the rest of the church as the organ music pulsated. Before the funeral service, a hearse carrying the native New Yorker's remains took Vandross on one final tour of Harlem, pausing outside the Apollo Theater before heading west to the church. Before achieving stardom, Vandross had twice finished second at the Harlem theater's famed amateur night. Singer Gladys Knight, another Vandross friend and admirer, sent along a faxed message that referenced the singer's last hit, "Dance with My Father." Luther Vandross Sr. died when his son was still a child. "We should be happy for Luther," her message said. "He made a difference in this world, and now he has the extraordinary chance to dance with his father again."

  9. Former Run-DMC member Reverend Run has announced the completion of his first ever solo album, Distortion. The album was produced entirely by Run and Whiteboy. The first single from the album, “Mind On the Road,” will be featured in EA Sports’ popular football title, “Madden 2006.” Run, born Joseph Simmons, is the younger brother of Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons. Russell Simmons recently launched a new label, the Russell Simmons Music Group, which is distributed by the Island Def Jam Music Group, a Universal company. Simmons managed Run-DMC before founding pioneering Hip-Hop label, Def Jam Records along with partner Rick Rubin in 1984. “Timing is everything," Russell Simmons said in a statement. "The uncompromising loud abrasive rock and roll hip-hop of Run-DMC knocked open the doors to commercial freedom for the rap generation. Their very best efforts were big in the streets and were ahead of their time when it came to the mainstream. The debut album from Rev Run, Distortion, is honest, creative, special, refreshing, and still incredibly commercial. The time is now for Rev Run." The release of Run’s solo album also coincides with the release of four classic Run-DMC reissues: Run-DMC, King of Rock, Raising Hell and Tougher Than Leather. The reissues hit stores September 6, while Distortion hits stores on September 13. Reverend Run will star in his own MTV reality show, "Run's House," in the fall. The album will feature the songs "Boom Ditty," "I Use to Think I Was Run," "Break'em Til It's Broken," "Got a Way," "Home Sweet Home," "Distortion," "Changetime," "Beats to the Rhyme" and "High and Mighty Joe." ...
  10. It took Kanye West 4 hit singles to go double platinum on "College Dropout", plus I actually seen Common's new "Go" video getting more airplay than Kanye's "Diamonds..." video(deservingly so in my opinion, that "Diamonds" video sucks to me, I liked "Jesus Walks" better), so that's not a good sign for him, I think his hype's ending soon, the song's not even in the top 40 yet so don't be surprised if he doesn't go platinum in 3 weeks, not even the Black Eyed Peas are selling that much with their single being one of the top singles out right now, the only people that sell 5 million now is the ones that do something controversial or put out a gimmick, so it won't be a biggie if Will doesn't sell that much, it's better to get respect than be called a sell-out and I think that's what Will's most concerned about.
  11. Here's this week's numbers: 43 SMITH*WILL LOST & FOUND 23,008 -4 23,875 525,997 It's only 474,003 until platinum now, it should be platinum by Halloween if "Party Starter" hits #1 and the album sells at least 30,000 each week, "Tell Me Why" could then release with the tour and help it get to double platinum status! I think even Kanye West's gonna even struggle to go platinum 'cause even all the hype on him producing Common's album is seeing Common struggle to even go gold.
  12. Yeah the sales dropped a lil' bit, only a few hundred less though, 23,008, not a big drop at all, next week it should rise probably from the hype of the Live 8 concert, probably passing Fat Joe and Common albums, and if "Party Starter" comes out soon sales might even double to pass Mike Jones tippin' on his 4-4s! :wiggle: TWRank--Artist--Title--TWSales--%CHG--LWSales--RTDSales 1 STRAIT*GEORGE 13. I'm looking forward to this new Kool G Rap joint, he's one of the greatest lyricists to ever touch the mic, did any of y'all see him freestyle on Rap City a couple weeks ago? That was the best lyricism I saw on BET in a long time!
  14. Will's not gonna be able to do too many shows to promote "Party starter" 'cause he starts filming a new movie next month, he might be able to do a few this month so the "Party Starter" video's gonna have to get more airplay than "Switch" has gotten to make an impact, it's gonna have to be #1 on TRL and 106 & Park and be in heavy rotation, it's up to us to vote for it when it comes out, I think hip-hop radio will play it too since Ludacris produced it so I don't think doing shows to promote "Party Starter" will be necessary, it's gonna be an instant smash! :jazzy:
  15. Happy B-Day Schnazz! :jazzy:  :music:
  16. Kool G Rap’s musical career has been a journey that most Hip-Hop aficionados could only dream of. Now the self-proclaimed “Donald Goines of Rap” plots a simultaneous comeback and exit from a profession he helped pioneer since the 80s. AllHipHop chronicles this expedition in THE REBIRTH OF KOOL G RAP, a reoccurring feature. Check in this week as G Rap discusses the art of the mixtape. Kool G Rap: For people asking what I’ve been up to, I’m finishing up the mixtape. Green Lantern’s gonna be hosting in. I pretty much been focusing on recording. I haven’t been performing much lately. The last two months, I been getting the mixes done. I’ve been doing extra songs here and there - I already got a lot of songs. Everything I do now, is extra. Really, the songs is for both my mixtape and my album. This’ll drop within no more than two weeks. As far as the time off since Giancana Story, I take two or three years between records because I really try to put my best into what I do. I’m not the type of cat that’s gonna bang out an album in three months. It’s gonna take me longer than that. I’m really tryin’ to be creative with it. But at the same time, time off is not nothin’ that I do intentionally. I’m definitely my own toughest critic. These days, it’s a necessity – doing the mixtapes and all. You can do it with one DJ or a few. I’m just doing it with Green Lantern right now. It really was my man Questchon that arranged me and Green Lantern to work together. He thought Green Lantern was a really good look as far as hosting the mixtape. I got a team of cats around me nowadays that’s sitting here night and day, tryin’ to plot the next and best moves for G Rap. People thought Green Lantern was the best move. Other cats are nice too, but he’s the top of the list. It happened to work out with Green, so that’s the way we went. It’s not songs that I wouldn’t be able to put on my forthcoming album. I pretty much treated the mixtape as if it was an album – it’s not even a mixtape to me. I didn’t go really go crazy doing a bunch of stuff over other people’s tracks or nothin’. I pretty much did a whole catalog of original songs. You could sorta say this is like a G Rap street-released album. It’s not so much the normal mixtape you would get of a cat rhyming over other people’s beats and stuff. I did that a few times, not too much of it. You couldn’t pull out five songs like that. When I was with Rawkus, I had a lot of stuff circulating the mixtapes, ‘cause they was leaking everything. In my early days, Kid Capri and Ron G was doing it differently than DJ’s today. You gotta realize, 50 Cent set a standard. He made it necessary for artists to flood the mixtape circulation, so did the DJ’s who hosted his mixtapes like the Whoo Kid’s and them. 50 did mixtapes with so many DJ’s, I can’t even name ‘em all. They set the standard too, for mixtape DJ’s to do that with artists. Kid Capri and them wasn’t really doing that back that. They was just putting out mixtapes with other people’s records and freestyles. They never really snatched up a particular artist or group and based they whole mixtapes around them. This is all-new material. I pretty much set aside the songs I’ve recorded by never released. If I ain’t like ‘em enough to make the album, I’m most likely not gonna like ‘em a year after or two years after. A lot of mixtape DJ’s now, they snatch up all the old stuff that people ain’t throw on they albums, because it’s still vintage to them. It’s still something special to them, ‘cause it’s like Lost Tapes or like the lost episodes of The Honeymooners. There’s always a market for it. Even after my albums release, I keep workin’ right through. I got a studio in my house that’s available to me at any time. Before the studio, I would write here and there leisurely. But now, I’m in the recording stages every time that I write. I’m recording all the time. People don’t know that I was one that never liked a big crowd around me when I’m working. It’s distracting. I really like the atmosphere of the studio in my house. Now, I can get up, eat breakfast, go downstairs and record. You ain’t got no interruptions or distractions. Ain’t got people around me sitting there, boppin’ they head to anything and everything. That’s when I’m most creative. This is what the fans will hear.
  17. I wish they performed more JJFP stuff like "I Wanna Rock" and "Brand New Funk" but it's hard to squeeze everything in 10 minutes, credit has to be given to them for representin' for ol' school hip-hop, although I heard DMC performed "Walk This Way" with Aerosmith, did anyone see that? Since Will was the host they should have had more time to perform but everyone has to get a chance to perform, MTV sucks for not playing the whole 10 minutes of it though, Snoop's performance was weak, and I wish Mc Lyte performed instead of being a commentator.
  18. Hey I just found this article online: Will Smith Urges G8 to End 'Tragedy' By JAKE COYLE, Associated Press Writer 10 minutes ago PHILADELPHIA - If U2, Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd and Coldplay made London the rock capital of the world on Saturday, Philly was were hip-hop represented. ADVERTISEMENT Kanye West, Jay-Z, the Black-Eyed Peas and host Will Smith led the U.S. edition of the Live 8 concert series before a sun-drenched crowd that stretched a mile down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway from the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. After British rockers the Kaiser Chiefs kicked things off with their hit "I Predict a Riot," hometown boy Smith took the stage to begin hosting duties. "Right now you're watching the biggest concert event in the history of the world," Smith said. Pleading for leaders of the G-8 summit to "end this daily tragedy" of African poverty, Smith was beamed around the world by satellite as he led the global audience in snapping their fingers every three seconds, signifying the child death rate in Africa. "Today, we are here to declare our interdependence," said Smith in the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed. "Today we hold this truth to be self-evident: We are all in this together." Later, the rapper-turned-movie star returned for the most theatrical performance of the day. He was carried onto the stage on a throne, with women spreading rose petals in his path. The theme from "Rocky" played just yards from the steps that Sylvester Stallone famously climbed in "Rocky." That segued into a repeated sample of "the champ is here!" line that Smith delivered in the movie "Ali." Smith then introduced his old sidekick, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and they performed "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" before launching down memory lane with the theme from Smith's early '90s sitcom, "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," and his classic hit "Summertime." Smith's star power was only matched by Stevie Wonder, who closed the show by effectively turning Smith's finger snaps into handclaps. Backed by a dapper 11-piece band, Wonder proved he wasn't too old for a good funk groove on "Higher Ground" and "What the Fuss" — which had the blind singer strutting out in front of his keyboards. The final tune of the night was Wonder's classic "Superstition." One concertgoer, Paula Abdul, couldn't resist the beat, dancing enthusiastically on the side of the stage and, by extension, on the jumbo screens. "The meaning of being an artist is to really do these kinds of things," Wonder said backstage. "We cannot stop now. The only way we can end this is to give more love." Earlier, Kanye West performed "Jesus Walks" in front of an all-female string section outfitted in black skirts and dark stripe-like masks over their eyes. He delivered some of the harshest words of the day, lamenting "politicians who drive home in their Bentleys every night and watch thousands of Africans die." Backstage, he told The Associated Press, "I'm not into politics, I'm into people. I know that these people are dying. My people. This is an event that will go down in history." After Linkin Park started their set, Jay-Z came out for a mash-up with the rock-rap group. Jigga had the crowd chanting "Hova," his smooth cool in sharp contrast to Linkin Park's vein-popping fervor. The combination made for one of the days most popular performances, especially on Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'." One of the first acts, the Black-Eyed Peas, took the stage with their usual energy and frenetic weaving, performing "Let's Get it Started." The rap group also pulled out a Bob Marley classic as they sang with obvious symbolism, "Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight." Of course, there was much more than hip-hop. Dave Matthews, who hails from South Africa, began his performance by thanking organizer Bob Geldof "for throwing a party to make a better world." As to whether Live 8 would have any effect on the G-8 leaders, Matthews said backstage, "I think they're aware of what's going on, and judging from President's Bush's speech, he's moving in the right direction. We want him ... to move a little bit further," he said. Introducing it as especially appropriate, Maroon 5 played a version of "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" by Neil Young, who was to conclude the Canada concert. Country singer Keith Urban also played the cover card, performing Phil Collins' "Another Day in Paradise," while the not-exactly-current Def Leppard were sure to play their old favorite, "Pour Some Sugar on Me." The day's acts were punctuated by celebrities (including Natalie Portman, Jennifer Connelly and Richard Gere) who further reminded the audience of the cause with statistics and ways to petition. "Today's gathering is not about charity, it's about humanity," said "Rush Hour" actor Chris Tucker. Also in attendance were celebrities ranging from the Rev. Al Sharpton to Anna Nicole Smith, plus performers Alicia Keys, Destiny's Child, Toby Keith, Sarah McLachlan, Jars of Clay and Rob Thomas. Fans stormed down the parkway just before 6 a.m. and pressed as far forward as possible, but only those closest to the front were able to see the stage. The less fortunate were treated to giant screen broadcasts of the concert, along with clips from the other cities. Organizers and performers said as many as one million fans were there, but that was impossible to verify and seemed overblown, with several hundred thousand seeming more accurate. Police declined to provide an estimate. Bon Jovi performed "Living on a Prayer" after being introduced by actor Don Cheadle as hailing from "the most exotic of locales" — New Jersey. "An amazing event," Cheadle said backstage. "Hopefully it will light a fuse that will continue to go for years and years." ___ Associated Press Writer Deborah Yao contributed to this report
