TopDawg14
The weekend estimates are in and it's another second place finish for The Pursuit of Happyness. The movie, starring 3-time Golden Globe Nominee Will Smith, grossed $13 million over the weekend, just a 33% drop from last weekend. The movie has now grossed $124.1 million since its December 15th release. TopDawg14
The actual numbers from the weekend are in... and they came pretty close to the estimates. The Pursuit of Happyness raked in another $12.8 million over the weekend giving it a $124 million total. It was the movie's 3rd straight 2nd place finish after debuting at #1. This movie has had unexpectedly strong legs due to its strong word of mouth and favorable reviews. TPOH lost only 33.5% of its box office total from last weekend. Unless something really strange happens, TPOH will cross the $125 million mark on Monday and looks to finish around $150 million as the movie begins opening overseas in the coming weeks. TopDawg14
For the first time since Christmas day, The Pursuit of Happyness finished outside of the top 2 on Monday. Not to worry though as it regained the #2 position on Tuesday. In those 2 days, TPOH racked up another $1.6 million raising its overall total to $125.7 million. Its 2006 box-office ranking is now #15 while its worldwide ranking is #36. European fans of Will Smith will finally get a chance to see the critically-acclaimed movie as it will premiere in the U.K. on January 12th and Germany on January 18th. TopDawg14
Update: Apparently people are fascinated by Stomp The Yard as it crushed the competition in Friday's box office estimates. The movie based on fraternity steppers(and I should know something about that having graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta) pulled in $7.2 million for 1st place. The Pursuit of Happyness finished in 3rd place pulling in $2.5 million to raise its total to $129.9 million. The movie could cross the $135 million mark by the end of the weekend and certainly by Monday for the 4-day MLK Holiday weekend. Also, TPOH premieres in the U.K. so we should start to see international numbers coming in early next week.
TopDawg14
Box Office Update: After 3 consecutive weekends at #2, The Pursuit of Happyness finished third this weekend according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. The movie, starring SAG & Golden Globe nominee Will Smith, finished with $9.1 million to bring its total to $134.4 million. The movie is continuing to show strong legs as it lost only 29.4% of its box office total from last weekend. It is expected to cross the $135 million mark on Monday. The 4-day MLK Holiday estimates will be out Monday morning with the actual 4-day numbers expected by Tuesday afternoon. Most experts did not think TPOH could get to $100 million. At the pace it's on it looks to be a lock to surpass $150 million further cementing Will Smith's status as a bonafide all-around actor and star. The movie ranks #13 on the 2006 Yearly Box-Office list.
TopDawg14
Update: Despite losing the Best Actor Golden Globe award to Forrest Whitaker, Will Smith still has plenty to cheer about. The Pursuit of Happyness continued its strong run with a 3rd place finish over the 4-day MLK holiday. The movie grossed $11 million to boost its total to $138.3 million. The actual 4-day weekend numbers will come out Tuesday evening while the first international box-office numbers should come in by week's end.
