50 Cent 'Don't Like Alicia Keys No More'

(April 18) - When it comes to "Gangsta rap" 50 Cent doesn't play around.

He's not happy about comments Alicia Keys was quoted as making in a recent interview with Blender, even though the R&B songstress later said the quotes were "misrepresented" by the magazine.

Alicias Blender Mix-Up

In an interview for the May issue of Blender, Alicia Keys talked about the AK-47 pendant she wears around her neck "to symbolize strength, power and killing 'em dead" and is quoted as saying that "'Gangsta rap' was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other."

The singer also said the Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. feud was fueled "by the government and the media, to stop another great black leader from existing." She released a statement on April 15, saying her comments were "misrepresented" and that she isn't a "conspiracy theorist" or "a racist."

Keys has been reading a number of autobiographies by those involved in the Black Panther movement and that she plans to write more political songs. She explained that if the late Black Panther Huey Newton, above, "had the outlets our musicians have today, it'd be global. I have to figure out a way to do it myself."

"'Gangsta rap' was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other," Keys was quoted as saying. "'Gangsta rap' didn't exist."

According to the Associated Press, Keys issued a statement later saying that her comments were "misrepresented" and that she isn't a "conspiracy theorist" or "a racist."

"We stand by our story," Blender spokeswoman Kate Cafaro told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Regardless of Keys' explanation, 50 Cent wasn't too thrilled with the comment.

"I don't like Alicia Keys no more though … the same reason why I said that I don't like Oprah Winfrey," 50 Cent toldThe Showbuzz. "I'm prejudice(d). I don't like people who don't like me. If you don't like the content that I write because of my experiences; I am being who I am when I am writing it. I fall into that 'label' as far as you considering artists creating 'Gangsta music,' we fall into that.

"If she don't like that, (then) I don't like that classical music s--- she be doing. At some point she's playing some s--- that don't relate to me. … We listen to it and try to figure out why people actually enjoy it. I am trying to enjoy it. That statement changes my perception of Alicia Keys totally. But the magazine is standing behind it, which means they probably have a tape of her in conversation saying it. It's just not really a bright comment anyway."

A multiplatinum artist ("Get Rich or Die Tryin" and "The Massacre") and business mogul, 50 Cent made a fortune from using rap to share his story of growing up hustling in the streets since the age of twelve.

He believes that hip-hop as an art form is often misjudged.

"I think hip-hop is so competitive, that the competitive nature, the art form makes it a competition," 50 Cent said. "I don't think that a lot of people who judge hip-hop actually enjoy it as an art form. They aren't into it enough to understand what they are listening to and they just hear disrespectful lyrics going back and forth and just say 'oh they're fighting' … so it's got to be negative if it's fighting. To just make reference to what hip-hop was from the very beginning was just two artists battling. Battling turned into beefing after Biggie and Tupac passed because unfortunately that turned into real incidents in the street."

50 Cent, who knows this way of life firsthand, said his mother (who was a cocaine dealer) was killed when he was 8 years old.

"Those things happen in that kind of lifestyle," he said.

50 Cent said that his "reference of nice things died with her." His grandparents, who took him in, had nine children, which meant finances were strained and times were tough.

Although 50 Cent was successful, Columbia Records let him go after he was shot 9 times on May 24, 2000. The rapper was in his car outside of his grandmother's house in South Jamaica, Queens when a gunman pulled up and shot him at close range while he was sitting in the car. He was shot in the hands, legs, chest, hip and left cheek.

He managed to redeem himself in the music biz once he healed and stopped hustling. He may be scarred, but he seems unscathed by the incident today.

"When you get shot, you just get up and go back to doing what you were doing and music was what I was doing," 50 Cent said.

This is the whole problem with these rappers today. Whether or not you agree with Alicia's comments, she has the right to make those comments and express her opinions. 50 makes himself look real stupid with his comments. I'm so sick of these rappers talking about "I'm just trying to talk about what I experienced." B.S. You're "hustling" hip-hop to make money. You're putting out trash and filth. You're corrupting the minds of young people and I'm sick of him and all of these other trash rappers out there. IT'S NOT HIP-HOP!!!!! Hip-hop is about and has always been about an art form that discusses a myriad of subjects.

This is why people are getting sick of these rappers. They make garbage and then hide behind the curtain of "freedom of speech" and "it's a lifestyle" and other b.s. excuses.

Why do u always defend morons? A. Keys statements were kinda bold, but she wasn't talking crap. I mean, gangsta rap, tho' it's been dead for years is the biggest joke. Nobody believes the lyrics or that those guys actually live that lifestyle. FP has "talked more crap" than A. Keys has. Why don't u diss him?

Alicia Keys says comments to magazine were `misrepresented'

04/15/2008 5:00 PM, AP

The Associated Press

Alicia Keys says she's not a conspiracy theorist.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Keys said she was clarifying "comments that were made during my recent Blender magazine interview since they have been misrepresented."

According to an interview in the magazine's May issue, the 27-year-old singer says: "`Gangsta rap' was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. `Gangsta rap' didn't exist." She also is quoted as saying that she wears a gold AK-47 pendant around her neck "to symbolize strength, power and killing 'em dead."

"We stand by our story," Blender spokeswoman Kate Cafaro told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

"My comments about `gangsta rap' were in no way trying to suggest that the government is responsible for creating this genre of rap music," Keys said in a statement issued by J Records. "The point that I was trying to make was that the term was oversloganized by some of the media causing reactions that were not always positive. Many of the `gangsta rap' lyrics articulate the problems of the artists' experiences and I think all of us, including our leaders, could be doing more to address these problems including drugs, gang violence, crime, and other related social issues."

As for the AK-47 remark, Keys said Tuesday that AK-47 is a nickname given to her by friends "as an acronym for Alicia Keys and a metaphor for wowing people with my music and performances, `killing 'em dead' on stage. The reference was in no way meant to have a literal, political or negative connotation."

When AP attempted to reach Keys last week about the Blender interview, her publicist, Theola Borden, said the singer was on vacation and unavailable for comment.

The multiplatinum star behind the hits "Fallin'" and "No One" most recently had success with her latest CD, "As I Am," which has sold 3.4 million copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

You know what the truth really is when it came to 50's dumb-a$$ comments? If what he was saying had any merit, he wouldn't have to defend it all the time. They know what they're doing is poison but they do it anyway just for the sake of making money. As I've said before, these rappers are pimping hip-hop and are being pimped by this record industry.

There is no redeeming value in "gangsta rap". It's dehumanizing garbage. Everybody knows what's going on in the urban neighborhoods today so stop using the excuse of "I'm just trying to show what life is like out there." Stop hiding behind the "freedom of speech" argument. And instead of glorifying the garbage that you spew, how about trying to teach young people how not to make the mistake you made. Teach them that education is power. Teach them to respect life. Teach young men how not to objectify women. Teach young women to have respect for themselves and their bodies.
