Salt, a fictional CIA officer who is outed as a spy” in Phil Noyce’s “Edwin A. Salt”. Says the author, it’s over money. “Apparently, Tom is unaware of the change in his status in the Hollywood community. Where once he was the top-paid star, Cruise now is in a position where a $20 million salary is not possible. I’m told an internal memo went around among the film’s producers and top creators in which the Cruise situation was discussed and names were gathered for a replacement.” Friedman adds that Will Smith will likely replace Cruise. Thing is, this isn’t true. We can confirm that this isn’t true - none of it. High-ranking contacts within the production tell us - and we quote - “The studio, producers,director and potential star (Cruise) are all waiting on a rewrite of the script from Kurt Wimmer,which is due in a few weeks. Will Smith has not been approached to star. Cruise is the only actor who has been approached.” Cruise is still very much set for “Edwin A. Salt'' - or "Edwina A. Salt'', as the film will now be suitably retitled. The Philip Noyce-directed thriller is set for a February shoot in New York. Rumour has it that Cruise felt the role was a little too similar to that of his ''Mission Impossible'' character - IMF agent Ethan Hunt - and so left the production (He wasn't, contrary to what others say, fired from the production).
