Entertainment Weekly: Smith vs Ledger for Oscar?

I'll believe it when I see it regarding Pitt or Jolie. The Hollywood critics love Kidman, DiCaprio, and Winslet for these awards.

Now I don't want to sell Will short on this, but can't we get a break? I mean every year that Will puts out light-hearted or summer blockbuster films, the Oscar nominees aren't particularly 'on their game.' Yet when Ali came out, Russ Crowe and Denzel Washington wowed audiences (Washington won for Training Day). When Pursuit was the sure-fire winner, Whitaker and DiCaprio were formidable (Whitaker won). Now Will has an honest shot from all the discussion of his upcoming movie, and Ledger's career-defining performance coupled with his tragic death is going to leave Will with his most formidable competition yet.

Yikes.

What do you think?

P.S.-I know it is quite early to talk about this, but being that Entertainment Weekly made the first jump into the discussion, I don't see why not.

Ledger will probably be nominated for best supporting actor(because Christian Bale's the lead actor in TDK) so it's possible that Will could pick up a trophy for Seven Pounds.

It should be interesting to see how Will's performance in Seven Pounds is received. 2 time Oscar nominee, possibly three... His prestige in the industry is increasing.

He won't be getting one for SP.

Besides, TD mentioned it already Ledger can only be nominated for best supporting actor and Will (if) will be nominated in the best actor category.

To win an oscar, the movie has to be really good. Will rarely has had that chance.

a point that i picked up from the IMDB forum of seven pounds that i found interesting is that the best actor award is given to the BEST ACTOR.. and not the best movie. so its possible that he could get nominated for his sole performance in SP and SP not getting any other nominations.

and combined with the little factoid of ledger getting the best SUPPORTING actor... those are two things that can make for will to get his award, and if he does that will be one hell of a speech. and thats sometimes the sole reason why i watch the oscars when he is nominated. i know if he wins it will be very emotional and i will it too. not to be lame.

but then again we will have better judgment when the trailer comes out or come december when it comes out..
