Will Smith to arrive in Taiwan May 2 for movie promotion
Taipei, May 1 (CNA) Hollywood superstar Will Smith is scheduled to arrive in Taipei Thursday, along with his 15-year-old son Jaden, to promote their new film "After Earth," Sony Pictures said Wednesday.
It will be their first visit to Taiwan, the film company said.
Besides the film promotion, the father-son pair will also attend public interest activities during their stay, Sony Pictures said, adding that Jaden will take advantage of the visit to promote his own clothing brand MSFTS.
The Taiwan visit is part of an Asia promotional tour for their new science-fiction thriller that will be released in June. The tour will also take them to Japan and South Korea.
During their stay, the Smiths will meet with fans in Taipei's vibrant Xinyi shopping district on the evening of May 3. The Taipei 101 tower, which dominates the area, will display the film's title in lights that night.
On May 4, the actors will host an international news conference on the film at Le Meridien Taipei hotel, which will be broadcast live on the Yahoo!Taiwan Celebrity Entertainment channel.
Later that day, the Smiths will attend a charity event sponsored by the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families at Taipei 101, and pray with local youths there for protection of the Earth and the natural environment.
Before departing Taiwan on the evening of May 5, Jaden will join with Mandopop singer J.J. Lin at Breeze Center in Taipei to promote products that they have jointly endorsed.
"After Earth," set 1,000 years in the future, is the second film in which the father and son appear together. They co-starred for the first time in the 2006 biographical drama "The Pursuit of Happyness," which was Jaden's film debut.
The Smiths' visit comes on the heels of a whirlwind trip by Tom Cruise April 5-7 to drum up interest in his new sci-fic action film "Oblivion."
The visits indicate the great importance Hollywood filmmakers attach to the local movie market, industry sources said.
Taiwan has emerged as one of the world's top 15 film markets outside North America, the sources said.
With far less stringent film censorship rules than China, Taiwan has gradually become an important overseas market for Hollywood filmmakers to measure their movies' worldwide box-office potential.
More and more Hollywood blockbusters have premiered in Taiwan or have been launched in Taiwan and North America simultaneously, the sources said.
Following the Smiths' visit May 2-5, Chicago-born actor John Cusack will come to Taiwan May 6 to promote his new film "The Numbers Station."
Movie stars Zac Efron and Dennis Quaid are also scheduled to visit Taiwan in July to promote their new movie "At Any Price."
