Is music making a shift?

I've more and more been noticing music making a shift. Now when I say music, I mean the vocal singing, minus the autotune. It's probably easier to just show what I mean.

Mayer Hawthorne

Sharon Jones

Janelle Monae - Tightrope

Adele

And Basically Cee Lo Greens entire last album

I grew up with oldies and always hoped music would make a shift back in that direction, and a lot of these songs seem to be throwbacks to another era. Three of them have been getting a lot of play on the radio. Mayer Hawthorne has been making tracks as well, i believe he just signed to a major. Sharon Jones, I've seen make appearances on Stephen Colbert so she's making tracks also. I was just curios what you guys thought.

It's funny that you mention the Colbert Report. He doesn't have music too often, but when he does the artist is always dope. You picked out a lot good stuff. When someone makes big hits, that's when you see influence in the rest of the industry. Unfortunately, that works both ways, when a wack song gets blows up, more wack songs follow.

So here's to hoping more songs like these gain in popularity.

I think some things are changing. I think auto-tune is steadily dying. I think the watered down Euro-wanna-be dance sound is slowly dying. The last 5-8 years of music haven't offered much when it came to popular music. When it comes to rap and top 20 songs, they've been forgettable and by artists that are forgettable. It's been painful to watch artists like Usher, Rihanna, Ne-Yo, and Jamie Foxx make embarrassing music that isn't worthy of being mentioned with their previous work.

I like some music that gives a nod to music of the past, but I don't think it's going to dominate the future. I appreciate it, but not all of it grabs me. To be honest, I haven't even picked up the new Raphael Saddiq album because I just didn't like it much when I peeped it.

I think music is very interesting right now. There's many artists having fun with their music during what many people would say are some of the darkest and most stressful times that much of the world is experiencing. Reading what's in the news is amazing in a disgusting sort of way. Entertainment truly is one of the only real escape that many people have...and many of those people can't even afford it.

I think that if musicians and emcees realized what sort of "power" and responsibility they have, we wouldn't the Black Eyed Peas making songs like "Dirty Bit."
