LL Cool J Talks Working on New Album

LL has already started to lay the groundwork for his 13th studio album…

Just because LL Cool J hosted the 54th Annual Grammy Awards this past February and has a recurring role on CBS’ drama, NCIS: Los Angeles, doesn’t mean he’s forgot where he came from.

The multi-platinum and legendary rapper revealed that he’s working on a new album.

“As far as the album is concerned, it’s real authentic hip-hop, you know what I’m sayin?” LL told XXL yesterday (June 20), after announcing the launch of his new virtual studio recording software, My Connect Studio, in conjunction with Sony. “It’s LL Cool J being LL Cool J.

“It’s 2012, so it doesn’t sound like it would sound if it were 10 years ago or 20 years ago, but it’s definitely official,” he added.

Although LL didn’t reveal a title or ballpark release date, he did suggest that his 13th studio album would give listeners something that they haven’t heard.

“It’s a breath of fresh air,” he said. “It doesn’t sound like anything that’s out right now. I think it’s crazy. It’s the business. It’s real.”

Exit 13 back in September of 2008 marked LL last LP offering, as he hasn’t dropped a new album since.

Yesterday, he also shared that he already started using his My Connect Studio software, which essentially allows two people to collaborate on music real time despite their location, to record parts of his new album.

“I’m going to be doing a little bit of the album on the studio, make sure that it is official,” the MC discloses. “And as a matter of fact I started on my album too. It’s authentic hip-hop, it’s the business.”—Mark Lelinwalla

XXL.com, "Exit 13" was basically a sign of the times, LL did his thing as usual but he was trying too hard to go multiplatinum by doing collabs that clearly didn't fit but there was also some production with Marley Marl and DJ Scratch which made it a great album, I hope Rick Rubin is doing some production on this album, and we all want that JJFP collaboration with him to happen

I think Exit 13 was his weakest album when it came to it's sound. The production/sound of the album was all over the place. It's not that I minded that so much, it was that half of it wasn't very good. The subject matter was mostly good and so were the lyrics. There were a few moments that came across as to simple or common for LL. I'm hoping/assuming the next album will be more on point.

Exit 13's actually one of my favorite albums of the last 5 years in hip hop, a lot of the top albums of this time period had guest appearances that didn't fit, that's why I said it's the sign of the times but not many of those albums had Marley Marl and DJ Scratch production so that actually makes it better

Anyone listen to LL's new single? Seems like he's taking the same route as Exit 13, which isn't really a good thing. The beat is watered down and unfortunately sounds like something you'd hear on the radio. The vocals on the hook are stupid. His delivery is good but nothing special. The lyrics and subject matter is less than inspiring. This almost sounds like a filler cut that wasn't included on The DEFinition, Todd Smith, or Exit 13. A word to LL, stop trying to compete with these young, mentally challenged rappers on the radio. You always make great music when you just do you.

I couldn't agree with you more AJ. I always get excited for a new LL track and when I saw the title of the album was "Authentic Hip-Hop", I get real excited. Ratchet goes right in the trash. This track really sucks. It's not even clever, it's stupid. LL says he's not trying to compete with an 18-year old going on their 2nd album but this song is quite the contrary. Horrible.
