Guardians of the Galaxy did quite well, and very few people... even comic book fans... were well versed on the characters and their significance to the Marvel Universe. Remember when Will said he studied the top 10 movies and they all had creatures in them. I think he's done the same and found out superheroes are bringing in the crowds in the 2010's.
