bigted
How can the #1 album, be a greatest hits album, from an artist who only had like..3 or 4 Singles >_> ← Better yet how could somebody only 19 years old with only one album out have a greatest hits album? :willvspaparazzi: This is obviously a slow week in music if that happens, btw it's been a slow year in hip-hop too, "Lost and Found" is actually like the 5th highest selling album this year, Ludacris, Kanye West, and Eminem were released last year so they don't count but it's kinda disturbing that they're all sellin' more than "Lost and Found" The top selling hip-hop in 2005: 33 50 CENT MASSACRE 24,090 -6 25,703 4,278,632 144 GAME DOCUMENTARY 6,852 -17 8,245 2,195,986 4 BLACK EYED PEAS MONKEY BUSINESS 85,368 4 82,143 1,208,947 25 JONES*MIKE WHO IS MIKE JONES? 30,319 -9 33,168 1,030,572 163 SMITH*WILL LOST & FOUND 6,180 -15 7,237 617,854 23 YING YANG TWINS UNITED STATE OF ATLANTA 32,216 -11 36,135 610,113 72 COMMON BE 14,178 6 13,421 583,439 7 YOUNG JEEZY LET'S GET IT 61,174 1 60,814 451,142 18 BOW WOW WANTED 40,746 -10 45,055 414,250 172 FAT JOE ALL OR NOTHING 5,762 -17 6,968 252,
JumpinJack AJ
I'm amazed that some of that stuff is so high and how some of it is so low. If quality waz in issues, FP would be on top along with Common Sense and the Black Eyed Peas. Kanye West would be in the middle...and 50 Cent would be nowhere in sight. bigted
R.Kelly's album is falling fast, 21K and he's #39 but it looks like he'll be platinum in a couple weeks which only John Legend and Destiny's Child has done recently in r&b, I think he needs to release a new single, the "Trapped In The Closet" episodes are losing interest in the public, the crowd didn't seem to be into the performance at the VMAs. Black Eyed Peas are still doing well, they're #4 on the charts and are already platinum with the 3rd highest selling album, if they could stay in the top 10 for a lil' while they could outsell Game, maybe even 50 Cent too since his sales are slowly fallin' too but not fast enough and with the re-release comin' he'll probably push 5 million altogether like his boy Eminem, that's actually less than "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'" that sold 7 million so slowly his popularity's ending, I see 2 more albums at the most and his career's over especially since he releases nothin' but annoying club anthems, even Eminem is more versatile than him. Mariah Carey might having the highest selling album of the year in music too since she's still #3. 2005 is 2/3 over with only 4 platinum albums and 3 gold albums in hip-hop, that's low considering how many releases came out this year, probably around 100 since there's 3 or 4 released a week, so for Will to be in the top 5 is quite an accomplishment, he's even outsellin' Bow Wow who's half his age. I think Fat Joe doesn't deserve to flop as much as he's had, he should go at least gold 'cause he does got some skills too, he should be in the middle of the charts too if talent sells. Tim's right that the commercial industry is dead, hip-hop is the highest genre and look how low sales are, look like people are losing interest in music. TopDawg14
As I look at this list I become more convinced that music in general is dead. Look at the hype Common got and yet he hasn't cracked 600k. It further solidifies my point that the reason why Will hasn't sold more is not putting out more singles but the industry itself and the people at large. The industry would rather promote filth like 50 Cent and Mike Jones and throw away the 2 best hip-hop cds of the year(Lost & Found, BE). The masses of people are worse because they accept and gravitate toward the filth that's being put out. :dontgetit: :bangcomp: :tantrum:
MaxFly
I still can't get with that ideology TopDawg. It can easily be argued that the reason Will is at number 163 on the charts right now and not at a higher position is that in addition to resistance from the industry, he hadn't released a single in 6 months and no one has really talked about Lost and Found for 4 and a half months. As an artist who promotes positive music, Will will undoubtably meet resistance from the industry, and such resistance will have negative effects on his albums, but by placing the blame soley on the industry and ignoring the poor promotion and the lack on interest in the album due to the absence of more singles, you're turning a blind eye to the main problem Lost and Found has had to deal with. In saying, "the reason why Will hasn't sold more is not putting out more singles but the industry itself and the people at large," you are in essence intimating that 163 is the glass ceiling for Will at this present time and that there was nothing he nor interscope could have done in their promotion of Lost and Found to change that. I don't believe that Lost and Found would be at 163 if the album were better promoted and a single had been released earlier to further garner interest in the album. kbfprince
I don't get it. All of people I know and on message boards flame Mike Jones but it's selling more than Lost and Found and Be? :paperbag:
bigted
Maybe if Will released more singles "Lost and Found" would be doing Black Eyed Peas' or Kanye West's numbers since they're positive rap artists at least but still releasing the worst song on the album as a single and having the 5th highest selling hip-hop album this year is pretty impressive, now if we could get "Party Starter" and "Tell Me Why" to eventually come out over the next few months, it might be the 5h or 6th album to go platinum(assuming that Kanye West goes platinum still, maybe 7th or 8th at the worst if Outkast and DMX have big success again, I think Tony Yayo's gonna flop and start the beginning of G Unit's demise, lol, which'll lead to 50's movie floppin' too) by the time the year's over, it's gonna be a long road to platinum though 'cause even if the album jumps back into the top 40 it'll only sell about 20K a week and if you do the math you'll see that it still won't go platinum even if that happens, people just don't buy that much albums now, the main point is that Will's stil one of the highest selling hip-hop artists after all these years and that's a major accomplishment that shouldn't be taken for granted, I mean even younger rappers like Bow Wow and Cassidy can't even put up his numbers and more pressure's on them to do high numbers 'cause their labels'll drop them and they'll have a hard time signing somewhere else 'cause they don't have Will's resume and status to back them up, even Fat Joe has some security at this point since he has a couple of platinum albums, he'll be able to sign somewhere else if he gets dropped, Will doesn't have to worry about that though 'cause he's got a gold album at the worst case scenerio and that means Interscope must keep him since not many are putting up high numbers, it ain't just Will, like the Fugees said "too many mcs, not enough mics", over 100 commercial rap albums came out and Will's the 5th highest, that means he's outsold 95% of the rap game! :word: Edited September 1, 2005 by bigted
TopDawg14
Well BEP and Kayne are hot right now and the exceptions to the rule. It will be interesting to see if they can keep it up. It might have helped if Will released more singles but how much? It's not like Will's a rookie at this. Dude's been in the game for 20 years. The album got shine thru the hip-hop message boards and there was good word of mouth about the album so what went wrong? Simple, the industry is what went wrong. Interscope is possibly even worse than Sony concerning proper promotion of an album. The politics of the industry is just ridiculous. You have empty suits in boardrooms controlling music and that just shouldn't be. I'm just sick of it. Rap bores me right now. If not for L&F and Be I would probably be done with rap completely.
