3cookies
Jazzy Jeff creates perfect blend 10:33 AM CST on Monday, November 14, 2005 A guy waiting to hear DJ Jazzy Jeff spin at Minc over the weekend wore a T-shirt that read, "Deejays are not Rockstars." CHRIS HAMILTON/Special Contributor Dallas hip-hop queen Erykah Badu introduced her friend DJ Jazzy Jeff to the audience during his Saturday set at Minc. Dude, return that shirt for a full refund. Jazzy, the spinner-producer best known as Will Smith's former partner, proved the shirt incredibly wrong Saturday night as he dazzled a packed house of b-boys, chic misses, hip-hop heads and neo-soulsters for more than two hours. And the guy in the shirt never stopped dancing once Jazzy took the turntable around midnight. Homegirl Erykah Badu brought Jazzy to the stage, praising him as the best DJ on the planet (she spent the night in one of Minc's booths with friends and an ominous-looking dude who kept crazies away as she grooved). Badu turned the mic over to Skillz, an MC who hosted Jazzy's flow through classics (Tribe Called Quest, Geto Boyz) and newbies (Kanye West, Beyoncé). Along the way, Jazzy added nicely placed touches of rock, pop and R&B (Queen, Nirvana, Michael Jackson). He schooled the hands-in-the-air crowd with blends of original cuts and rap songs that sampled them. Think Herp Alpert's "Rise" and Biggie's "Hypnotize." Sensing he'd worked the sweaty crowd into frenzy long enough, he mercifully closed with the theme song from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air , Smith's sitcom in which Jazzy had a recurring role. "That wasn't a DJ set," said one woman leaving the bar. "That was a concert." Lori Price Edited December 1, 2005 by 3cookies
