LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 17, 2004--Will Smith, known as "Mr. Summer," thanks to the record-breaking tallies of his past summer films "Independence Day," "Men in Black" and "Men in Black II," has done it again: His latest blockbuster, I, ROBOT, toppled "Spider-Man 2" from the #1 slot at the box office yesterday (16). I, ROBOT's opening day number was $18 million.

I, ROBOT's impressive opening day numbers signal the continuation of Twentieth Century Fox's red-hot streak of summer box-office winners, including MAN ON FIRE, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, GARFIELD: THE MOVIE and DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY. Next up for the studio, on August 13, is the long-awaited ALIEN VS. PREDATOR.

I, ROBOT is an action thriller, suggested by the book by Isaac Asimov, in which Smith plays a police detective in the year 2035. Technology and robots are a trusted part of everyday life -- but that trust is suddenly broken, and only one man, alone against the system, sees it coming. I, ROBOT is directed by Alex Proyas ("Dark City," "The Crow") from a screenplay by Jeff Vintar and Akiva Goldsman and a story by Vintar. The film is a Davis Entertainment Company / Laurence Mark / Overbrook Films Production, produced by Laurence Mark, John Davis, Topher Dow and Wyck Godfrey. Will Smith, James Lassiter, Michel Shane and Anthony Romano are the Executive Producers. Steven R. McGlothen is the Co-Producer.
